Need ideas for conversation classes.
« on: August 18, 2010, 05:10:11 PM »
I teach at an all boys high school and I have two extra conversation classes a week. I'm having problems coming up with ideas of what to do with them for the fall/winter semester. What have you been doing with your extra classes?

My students really seem to enjoy current events. I subscribe to http://www.newsademic.com/. Every couple of weeks they send me a cover story(free)  on some world event that we read before meeting and then discuss. The article comes with a worksheet to plan your questions for discussion. Depending on how long you classes are, you may want to consider murder mysteries. I have just purchased a set of 4 and tried one with my small group yesterday. I play the butler or gardener and point fingers at everyone until they get the idea. They loved it! Happy to send the pdf file if you are interested. Good luck!

I've used Breaking News English a few times with my conversation classes. There is usually a news story and a pile of ideas for how to teach it. It was great during World Cup, too.

I have a class of 14 disinterested students. I've tried articles which turned into paper airplanes and crumpled.

Play to their interests.

Tell them that each class 2 students will present their favorite character from the game they like to play best. They should use screenshots, explain the armor and weapons, what type of character (wizard, warrior) etc.

Ask questions during their presentation. Allow the class to ask questions too.

It will take a few weeks before all the students are finished. Then start getting into which character is better. You can have huge classroom debates on topics like:

Who would win in a fight - a warrior from WoW or a Wizard from <insert game name here.>

Which game is better.

Etc

The students will give you all the info during their presentations. Use that to form the debate questions.

I'm at a boys' high school and did a lesson on WWE. It made me cringe but it worked brilliantly and was a lot of fun, lol.

As a warm up, I downloaded the theme songs for some of the more well known wrestlers and then played them to the class and had the students identify whose songs they were (all of them knew the answers).

Then we got into vocab (using lots of visuals from different episodes), watching some clips and then discussing them together.
