Don't be a robot
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:44:07 am »
This lesson focuses on intonation. Start by showing them a few videos of robots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3C5sc8b3xM (they find this one funny - robot running)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcIlTKoDPGI (dancing robot animation)

Get some rhytmic chanting going by scrolling through the attached pics one by one on the screen.
Teacher: "Answer the door!"
Students: "Answer the door!"

I've included a list of all the commands in the doc file. They all "fit" quite nicely into a rhythmic groove. So you can drill them without stopping.

Explain intonation, how it makes you sound like a human, not a robot. Then get them in groups and give each group a copy of the pictures, practicing from memory. To motivate them, you can say 10 minutes of memorizing, then a quick flashcard quiz - group with the most right answers wins.

I also got some tinfoil and gave each group about 3ft of it to make a robot out of one of the students. I teach 24 classes a week, and the total cost was 10,000 won for the week, so it's worth it. This is hilarious. Phones will emerge.

If they're above basic commands, you can extend the language to "I am answering the door" or "I answered the door" etc.

Fuzzies,
John

I think it would be funny if the most robot-like student had to dress as a robot :P this way it's a deterrant for speaking that way? Would that be a good idea as long as it's not made humiliating? lol

Depends on the class. There are some students I'd like to throw rotten fruit at though, maybe you're onto something joeyjoejoe

How can I open that file??

To download the file, you can download WinRar here: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm.
it's a very useful program for opening zip files. a zip file is simply a number of files stuck together in one pack, sometimes compressed to save space. they're very common. enjoy

Thanks for the idea, absolutely amazing for after exams!

I made a powerpoint to go with this. I should point out, I changed the angle of the lesson away from intonation to just giving instructions, but you can do it your own way still I think.

The powerpoint is very long but I have basically just mixed up the order of the instructions so that up to 6 robots can run the time trial in my class, and still be on their toes/listening.

Some of my low-level classes I had to go back to the practice stage when it came to time trial time (so the just had to read out the instructions, instead of from memory).

The computer on button i printed out and stuck to the front of the class, most of the found objects were in class or from home. I used my microphone as the radio. I suppose you could just get them to mime if you dont have stuff.

I did the instructions for the first two (present) runs to try and get them feeling less self conscious, and to show them about doing it quickly and correctly.

For the practice stage, print out slide 45(?) with all the pictures and the .doc which is near enough the OPs lesson plan. Get them to practice pointing and answering quicly in groups.

I was very nervous as I have HS boys, but the majority of them got into it and my co-teachers were very impressed.
