Highschool English Book "Practical English Conversation" Lesson 11 Topic 1

I like this lesson as I often get Koreans explaining Korean things to me in Korean and it's hard for them to understand why I can't understand what they're talking about.  After I pressure them they end up telling me there isn't an English word for something and we leave it at that.

With this lesson I like to get my students thinking about speaking to a foreigner and how they would explain certain Korean words and traditions without using Korean.

Each team is given a set of words, they have to write the clues for those words in three sentences or so.  I remind them not to speak loudly because they don't want the other teams to hear the words before the clues are given.  After the teams have finished writing their clues we go around the class sharing the clues aloud and the teams much guess what is being described.  The descriptions can be pretty interesting but I think it's a good way to get them to think about their culture in English.

At this point in the year I'm having my students making their own conversations using some of the Key Phrases from the book, but if you have lower level you can just use the conversation straight from the book.

This is a great idea, I have asked my students to explain what certain foods are and they have trouble doing it without using korean. This seems to be a good exercise to get them thinking more in english.

thanks,
