High School - Family Topics
« on: October 07, 2010, 12:52:51 PM »
I made this because of a previous class where the students talked about them selves. But when they described their family, not a single student (out of almost 800) didn't use a correct phrase.

May want to create some extra worksheet for this one;)

Hey!

Family is the topic of this LP. This is for all levels, and reinforces not only their vocabulary of family, but perhaps broadens even their idea of family. At the beginning of the LP, I showed them a video of a prison in Philippines, where the prisoners are, I hope, rehabilitated through the mother of the arts, dance. It is interesting to watch. After showing them the video, I asked of them "what are some other ways we can help people come back in society (paint the walls, drama, band, confessional letters, etc), besides dance?" I want them to see we share a common humanity, and that their tax dollars will one day keep a prison system open... and that not only for the distribution of their money, but also for the welfare for other people, we should concern ourselves with a forgotten people (not, of course, simply applying a sentimental liberalism,  justifying all their actions by saying their mom didn't love them enough--which can be true at times, but is no scapegoat at all). Afterwards, I got them to identify the family member and in each photo. The rest of the LP is straight forward. It was a simple lesson plan, and I think the students enjoyed the simplicity and directedness of it. Enjoy.

This is the kind of Lesson that I absolutely love...any opportunity I have to give appropriate moral education I delight in...They need it severely...not just here, but all over the world : ) Keep up the good work!!!! I taught them things they can do to save the planet at the last English camp...motivated with Captain planet..then learned the theme song...then we learned the things we can do to save the planet: ) I'm also currently showing the Justin Beiber song " Pray" w/ lyrics at the end of a lesson if their is time. Cheers!

Modern Family lesson (s01e01)
« Reply #3 on: October 17, 2011, 05:30:10 PM »
Hi all,

I created this brief lesson on Modern Family (pilot episode, s01e01) for my low-level high school students.

Materials:
* Modern Family s01e01 - download from your usual source or stream it here (Korean subtitles incl) http://www.mgoon.com/view.htm?id=2590425
* Korean subtitles .smi (if using video file) - attached
* PDF Wordsearch - attached
* Powerpoint - attached

Quick lesson plan:
* Modern Family intro (plenty of info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Family)
* Quick chat about the traditional family unit and how it has changed (single parents, gay/lesbian couples, adoptions etc...) (5-10 mins)
* Wordsearch. When finished, explain some of the key vocabulary using the .PPT pictures (10-15 mins)
* Watch the episode!  :D (23 mins)
* Questions (make up your own as you watch the episode) (5 mins)

My students understood most of the humour in the show and really enjoyed it, already demanding more!

Enjoy - feel free to share, edit, improve etc...

This is brilliant.  One of my favorite shows, I can't believe I never thought of showing this to my students!  Great job.  Thanks for sharing.

Individual files attached - in case anyone had trouble with the zip file....

The subtitles file can not be added as an attachment on Waygook but you can download it here: http://gom.gomtv.com/jmdb/view.html?intSeq=597628&preface=0&spage=5

I tried this with my adult class. My one CT loved it, asked for more. The other one was horrified. The gays, OMG! I've thought about showing it to my HS kids, maybe I'll save it for the end of the year. They're so immature about these things, it makes me not want to show them anything vaguely out of their little mind boxes. How did your kids like it, OP?

I had to use this in one of my classes yesterday because my coteach decided to give the kids a break.  My kids were so surprised by some of the things in the episode but overall they found it really funny.  I wouldn't show this with a coteacher who is not really "open" to things.

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't get any weird reactions from my students re: the gay couple, just a couple of nervous titters.
It went down really well with 7 of my 8 classes (one class were super sleepy and nothing would have woken them up).

I found a family tree online for the modern family cast.  I colored the names out using paint program, printed them, and part of their 'after watching the video' assignment was filling in the family tree and going over it.  I give points for the fastest to complete and then a point for the student to raise their hand and answer the questions.
I then do a lot of questions about how they are related.  Ex. Manny is Luke's ....  A: Brother B: Cousin  C: Uncle  D: Father  Answer:C
It's a nice way to get them to figure out relationships when they have a complicated family tree.
I found the video with subtitles on www.mgoon.com  - the link is in the powerpoint, hopefully it still works, if not do a search on the site
Cheers,
a.

Here is my powerpoint and handout- note I have my picture and my weekly- learn an English slang word at the beginning you might not want to use.

Thanks to the OP for this idea.  For anyone else that is allowed to show this in their class, here are some word searches and accompanying PPTs for ep 2 and 3.   Happy showing!

Just a quick little FYI,

One of the scenes in the first episode has Gloria talking about how her ex-husband and her just "fought and made love." She says it like 3 or 4 times in a row, and the Korean subtitles translate to "Have sex, Have sex, have sex."

Showed it in one class, co-teacher said nothing. Showed it in another, different co-teacher was a little horrified. I was too actually. Thought it just translated to, "Make love" and that the students would have no idea what that meant. But yeah, just make sure you either fast forward that part or that the co-teachers are cool with it. (I teach Middle School btw).

@Flukeriffic - Yep thanks for pointing that out too, one of my teachers mentioned it to me that it sounded a bit racy in Korean (as it's pretty tame in English).

@bhwung - Thanks for your additional PPT material :)

I did the lesson this week, and it went well overall. No co-teacher complains! Here's my blog post about it: http://annyongchingu.blogspot.com/2011/11/i-watched-modern-family-15-times-in-one.html

Here is an edited .smi subtitle file for the downloaded version of the pilot episode. I have removed the dialogue during Gloria's interview where she says "have sex" and also the "what the ****" from Phil's dialogue. Now you can just play it without worrying about having to fast forward.
