Stress and suicide lesson plan for high school and adult students
« on: September 07, 2011, 08:08:57 am »
Due to the topicality of the lesson I can't really trial it before the post. The lesson plan is fairly straightforward.

NB: I almost never, ever play hangman, but I thought it would be a nice way to introduce a potentially difficult topic.

NB2: Please allow for discrepancies or inaccuracies regarding the role of Samaritans in the PPT or lesson plan - it's just a way of getting to the dialogue part of the lesson and probably does no justice whatsoever to the good work they do.

good luck!

FEEDBACK:
This lesson worked very well, although practical reasons forced a few changes. I showed the first part of the PPT with the 3 examples then when we got to the causes of stress I simply brainstormed them on the board. Then we discussed ways to relieve stress and I wrote them up in a different colour. We continued with the people's problem and asked students to suggest advice using "You should... You could... Try to... Why don't you?...", etc.
I abandoned the prompting exercise - my students english is low level so I simply got them to make a dialogue in pairs, practise it, then we read a few examples. I suppose you could play around with the plan to suit your class/classroom.
Thankfully the topic was nowhere near as sensitive as I'd feared and since the results of the study in this weeks article are for 2009 it should be a lesson that will work for a while.
