Hi All

I have my first open class in a few weeks and I want to get prepared. I think the topic is going to be completely up to my and I want to use this week to get ideas bottomed out.

Has anyone done shopping for their open class? If so how did it go? Any suggestions would be great as Im hitting a mental block. I want it to be a really good lesson. My students are high school girls and I'll be doing the open class with the more advanced students so really want them using sentences.

If anyone has any ideas for do's and don'ts I would be really grateful.

Thanks!

The American versions of teen magazines (Seventeen, Elle Girl, Cosmo Girl etc.) often have fashion guides that list the prices of various clothes and accessories. You could make copies of these and give each student a shopping list to fill out with a certain amount of money to spend. Then you could get them to describe their new outfits. If you can't find one of the mags you can always make your own fashion guide. They already know colours and clothing items so it shouldn't stump them. This is also a good way to work in numbers, something very easy for a FT to teach.

With HS girls I'd be most worried about the class going to silent once it's full of visitors. You might want to spend the lesson before the demo doing some similar activities, but make sure the material for the demo is fresh. If it's a more advanced class you might also have trouble finding a meaningful role for the CT. Even if you don't usually teach with one they'll want it to look like you do.

However, as always most of the judgement will have already been passed after the evaluators meet with the P and / or VP and / or senior English teachers.
