Pictures That Changed The World [ Lesson ]
« on: September 21, 2011, 03:54:02 PM »
What's up HS teachers!

I've decided to start posting some of my more advanced lessons here (from the middle school board). I'm not entirely familiar with the capabilities of HS kids, so this may or may not be appropriate for your classes. Let me know what you think! If it's received well, I'll continue to post new lessons here in the future.

****C&C'd from original posting****

Warning This lesson is a fairly significant departure from my other lessons. It is highly controversial and requires heavy assistance from your co-teachers. My co-teachers all agreed that this lesson was worthwhile, but your school may deem it inappropriate. Make sure to clear it with them first.

It was designed to get my students to be more reflective about everything; about their life problems relative to the rest of the world, about human history and about their future.

Lesson Details
1. Famous Pictures
-Show famous pictures that changed the course of history
      -Explain the background
-Get students to try to guess the country of origin
-Discuss the impact of the picture on global events
2. Steve Job's Stanford Graduation Speech

You might find the students have difficulty providing feedback. The content is quite difficult, so even your advanced students will struggle. That's okay. I figured it was worthwhile to teach this even if they only sit and passively listen.

Your PPTs are always fantastically done!  Thanks for this.

I teach high level students in high school and I think they'd really enjoy this lesson!

Nicely done if a bit grim.  How did your students respond to the Power Point? Did they find the experience of seeing the pictures and talking about them valuable?

Anyone else having trouble opening this file? It's saying it's corrupt. Would love to give this lesson a look. Any suggestions?

Wow. That was really tastefully done, as well as being very powerful.

I won't be able to teach this at my school though. Anything that might be seen as controversial is strictly banned.

This is amazing!  I can't wait to use it with my high school students.  I will also use it when I go home with my high school students in Canada. Thanks for putting so much work into this, and then sharing.

I had a LOT of assistance from my co-teachers for this lesson. They also felt the content was worthwhile so they made the extra effort in my classes to make sure they understood the concept/story before I proceeded to the next slide. I would say a majority of the students (middle school) are too immature to fully comprehend the significance of the various pictures, but most became aware that pictures really have the ability to change the world. They are all also at least somewhat familiar with many historical events that they had never been exposed to. The only one events that they had any knowledge of were the nuclear bombs, The Hindenburg (a few) and the Gwangju movement (about half). Most of my students took the lesson very seriously and it was nice to see a lot of my students nodding their heads up and down throughout the lesson.

Thanks--I'll use it, although a few changes on my part will include removing the camera body/theme you use and either use the photos for an entire slide or just most of it.  Why diminish them and make them smaller?

That said, thanks again and all the more thanks for making a powerpoint that looks decent.  A trivial complaint but:  Most of the powerpoints here seem to be created by people who are lazy and slap ome silly typeface in silly colors in silly ways with silly pictures against an absurd background.  They're ugly they're unusable, but usually inspirational.

Really digging the other powerpoints of yours I looked at.  Thanks.

beautiful lesson...I really loved this especially because I majored in Photojournalism. I wish I could use it for my school but I teach at a low level high school and my co teachers want me to teach at an elementary-low middle school level.

It's to be expected. Most of the teachers that go through the effort of sharing their lessons genuinely have a passion for teaching, but most have not had the benefit of a business background (my major) or another major that required extensive knowledge of the Word Suite. Similarly, my lessons suck at actually teaching solid English concepts due to my non-teaching, non-language major.

Actually, I spend a significant amount of time refining the aesthetic portion of the PPs so that I can present them in my work portfolio. I also get a weird sense of accomplishment from making unique PPs. It's become an unintended hobby of mine over the last year. haha

This lesson looks really nice.  The only thing I'm thinking of changing is adding a few more positive, or at least ambivalent inspirational photos.  That might make the lesson a bit more palatable for my high schoolers.

Thanks for posting this in the high school section.

My school is very conservative on stuff like this so I can't use it but I hadn't seen any of your posts before.

I haven't had time to download and look at anything you have done but I did get to look at some of the threads attached to your lessons and the discussions are really interesting.

Doesn't seem to completely gel with my style but I love seeing the diversity (fresh approaches) and its good inspiration.

Thanks~ please post your revised version as well! i'd like to see what improvements you made~

Most of my photos were obtained here:
http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0309/lm01.html
http://www.worldsfamousphotos.com/

I originally had a few more positive pictures, but I ended up cutting them out over the week because my students couldn't answer the "What happened next?" for those pictures. It wasn't quite obvious how they affected the world.
Ex: Beatles, Ghandi, Einstein, Afghan girl etc. are historically significant, but it's hard to grasp what they meant from the photo alone.

Leo...

Great choices of images.  And I love your manifesto on slide 1 - you did a pretty great job with this lesson in fulfillment of your manifesto.  I agree with you 100%...desire for English has to be internally driven and so I try to teach in a manner that inspires them, gives them more confidence...and more importantly, about the world and their place in it.  Teaching this type of content is important particulary because the Korean government wants to globalize the country.  Can you imagine a young Korean graduate working overseas in Europe and has never heard of the Holocaust while in conversation with Europeans?
