World music activity?
« on: October 25, 2011, 02:03:00 pm »
I am working on a lesson introducing my high school boys to world music.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for an activity to do, that doesn't involve a worksheet. I've been using them a lot and want to save some trees. Not to mention my kids groan every time I had them a piece of paper lol

Hey, not sure if this is what you're looking for, but during my MS summer camp I did a little warmup activity with world music.

I had a PPT map with 4 countries outlined and I asked the students for the name of each country. Then I played a 45-60 second clip of music from each country (obviously not a fair representation of the music from each country, but just some 'typical' music).

The students wrote which country they thought the music might come from on a piece of scratch paper. After 4 clips I revealed the answers and asked them to choose their favorite.

This whole process took about 6-8 minutes each time (I did 3 different warmups), so you could use it as a whole class activity if you added more information about the songs/countries or made a final guessing game. It could help them practice nationalities (It's from France. It's French.) or "I like/love/hate... because" (I like the song from Ireland because it's very interesting) or even music terms (catchy, has a good beat, etc).

I don't have the files with me, but if think you'd be interested in what I made, just let me know and I'll post them.  :)

Hi,

That sounds exactly like what I am looking for, thanks!
I'd be interested in the files, if you don't mind uploading them.

Cheers! :D

Here are the files (ppt & music clips in a zip file). They are pretty simple, but it's a place to start.

Good luck!  :D
