Korean Culture (with references to Irish culture)
« on: November 23, 2011, 03:28:47 pm »
Hi,

This is the last lesson / project i'm doing with my second graders before exams, school festival madness and christmas kicks in.

First, brainstorm important aspects of Korean culture on the board (Gyeongbukgong! Kimchi! Taekwondo!).

Next, ask them what a 'national cultural treasure' is (there are hundreds in Korea, look it up in wiki), and what No.1 is (Namdaemun). Then run through the PPT, with the students describing the 'cultural treasures' using No. 1 on their worksheet (fill in the blanks speaking).

Third, do the 'lunar festivals of Korea' matching activity on the worksheet, and ask the students to describe each festival ('where do you go on Buddha's birthday?' 'can you tell me the story of Chilseok?' etc.).

Then, tell the students that they are going to have some homework. Each group (5 in my classes) is going to give a 10 minute presentation on a cultural topic. I chose 'Korean sports', 'Korean arts', 'Korean food', 'Korean festivals' and 'Korean customs/ceremonies' as my 5 topics. They need to prepare the presentation with some material (PPT, pictures, objects, mp3 etc.) for next week. Co-teacher explains what they need to do in Korean (in my school this goes towards their grade).

Finally, give a 10 minute presentation on Irish culture, to give an example. Use easy sentences like 'Do you know ___' or 'It is famous because ____'

I did this lesson last week, and this week i've been really impressed with what they've come up with. Because they're working in groups they work much better on the project, and some groups have gone beyond the beyond, one even giving a Talchum performance in class...
