Hey, dwebsterlfc, I completely agree.
I used the Guy Fawkes one recently though and didn't want to follow exactly the same lesson plan. The poem/word search was intended as something relaxed before their exams. I am, however, making my own listening gap exercise to compliment a game for Christmas.
Watch out for the Christmas Countdown ;)

haha,

I used that too, I'm in the mind set at the moment of, if it gets them engaged then just do it lol. I know what you mean though about over doing it. I'm not going to do another festival/event based lessons until christmas now. I was thinking about asking my girlfriend to do a recording about christmas because all of the recordings I seem to hear are male voices, might help them get used to different tones. We'll see.

Again, modified. It's pretty lame, but I added a short introduction so the students could quickly get the information the need to know the answers to the game.  It's a short & sweet way to give some of the answers in the game without it being too easy.   Our classes are short and the kids are impatient to play, so the long Thanksgiving story would take up too much time!

Also, I made the "random" point ones (the Turkey) to be positive rather than negative, since I am worried some teams will die too quickly...

Have fun!
Amy

Happy Thanksgiving!
Also, I've found setting the teams health to 70% works really well.
The first team to finish the worksheet I give 100%  ;D

This was awesome, thanks to everyone who put in such hard work. I ended up using rdh2209's modification of the ppt (thank you both!) and wanted to do the turkey attack game but as my students are really low level I decided it would be too complicated and went with jeopardy instead. Because my students are really low level if I talk too much or show them too many slides without some kind of action they pass out, so I wanted to find some way to make this powerpoint more interactive.

I know this is a little late as Thanksgiving has already passed, and not the most creative idea, but hopefully this will be helpful for someone sometime. Though the powerpoint was awesome my kids were sleeping, so I borrowed a suggestion from an elementary school teacher and basically had the kids act out the story as I was telling it.

I asked for 7 volunteers and promised them stickers (my rewards system) without telling them what I would do. Then I gave one of them a crown labeled "King James" (make sure the kid that is King James is either popular or volunteers to be King James, as you will deflate his ego later) one of them a sign that said "England," one a sign that said "American," and I made the remaining 4 carry a sign that said "Pilgrims - 순례자." I then put everyone except "America" on one side of the classroom next to the chalkboard and "America" on the other. Then I set the stage by drawing "1620" on the board and telling them that "King James" and the pilgrims were in England. I then said that the pilgrims DON'T LIKE King James (accompanied by booing) and that they wanted to go to America. Then drew a boat, made the pilgrims act like they were sailing across the chalkboard, then put them in America. I then made two of them sit down (so there's only 2 left) and told the class that two of them died. Then I reintroduced them as Native Americans. Anyway you get the drift... basically we just acted out the story.

I thought it would be too juvenile (I teach 1st and 2nd grade high school) but the kids really loved it! Not only did the kids acting get really into it, but the kids watching loved it too because they got to see their friends making fools of themselves (pilgrims pretending to be sick/cold, King James getting booed). Also it wasn't too boring for the more advanced kids because I made them translate as we went (i.e. "the pilgrims are in England! What's the Korean word for England?").

Hope this is helpful!

Epotosky, your idea is fantastic. I'm actually a little sad that Thanksgiving has passed now, otherwise I'd have definitely tried this. I love drama.
I can't be sure my learners would go with it, but I'd definitely like to give it a try. Perhaps I'll use a similar idea in the future.

I know what you mean about the students falling asleep.
I don't ever read the PPTs otherwise the kids block me out.
I've found the best way to keep them on their toes is to choose 1 person from each team as each slide passes. That way they don't know who will be chosen.
Also, every few slides I make them all repeat something, and I question them about the story as we go along. If a student is talking to a friend or whatever, I'll make them stand up; they'll be the next person to read the slide...

It works for me...

Does anyone still have a copy of the wordsearch? I'm trying to download it but there is an error in the link. I'd really appreciate anyone who has it saved from last year to repost it!

So here is my rendition of the Turkey Attack Thanksgiving Story.

I start the class by giving the handout and explaining that today is a culture lesson. All 6 table groups will take turns to read the slides to me, instead of me reading to them. At the same time, they need to find the answers to the cloze worksheet. I mention that there is a game at the end so they need to pay attention to the information.

The first couple times I did this I was using the "Forte" font as in the original ppt, but I quickly found that my students really struggled to read it (it looks like hand writing), so it took way too much time to get through. I have now changed the font to one that is still a bit stylized but hopefully not too difficult to read. I also decided to go through and number the answers to the worksheet, because the first two, some of my highest level girls, had a hard time to find the correct information.

The worksheet is double-sided. The first side is the cloze exercise that accompanies the Thanksgiving Story ppt. The second side is a Thanksgiving vocabulary matching activity that I pulled off the net somewhere. So far I haven't gotten around to using the matching, but I think it's useful for them to have it anyway, to better understand the vocab. I might assign it as homework and use it for review next class.

Thanks very much to all the previous posters who helped me to get these ideas together. The game at the end is especially a big success, with the kids loving the turkey animations and, of course, the option to attack another team!

I'm not sure I quite understand how the Turkey Attack game works. When I click on the wrong answer sometimes the teams get +10%.  Also it shows all 3 different possible outcomes without transitioning to the next question. Also It keeps going back to questions we've already been asked. This games looks awesome and I'm played others like it (The Mario Game). I'm not sure if it's glitchy or I'm just missing something.
