KPop Debate & Contrast Vocabulary

I did this lesson for my open class as well as my regular 1st grade classes and it went over really well. All you need to do in addition to the materials here is print out some pictures of KPop bands for each team to choose their given band.

This lesson came after a lesson on music genres and ways to describe music.

Thanks, this looks great.  My class of 5th graders just finished their book early so we have an extra class that I need to fill.  They are a really talkative bunch so I let them choose the topic.  We wrote some ideas on the board and then voted - pop and entertaniment won so I wanted to find somthing that covers that but is also introducing some talking ideas.  Compare and contrast was just what I was looking for.

Did it work well for all of your classes? I have a boys and girls high school and am not sure if they guys would be interested in this or not. I know the girls would love it, but I would be a little worried that the boys wouldn't be as enthusiastic. Thoughts?

will work if you have some of 'their' fav groups or some of the girl groups 2 balance

the top groups are popular with both genders

My kids really enjoyed the lesson, I  changed it a bit to match their interests and I only have 50 minutes so could not cover a whole lot. 

I have a class of mostly girls but has three boys in it.  The girls loved it but they boys did not like the music so much, however we used this to talk about different opinions. I was happy for the boys to say they did not like it but they had to say why.  They did really well, we also watched on youtube one of the 'kids react to..' episodes where they watch Kpop.  It was good for them to see what other people think of Kpop especially as we watched some western pop and they reacted just the same was as the western kids did to Kpop.

How many groups or kind of genres did you cover in your lesson?

For mine I ended up having to use two lessons - lucky we had the extra time before I start their new book so it worked out ok.

I did six music videos overall but we did not watch the whole videos, some were a bit long.  I chose:
Girl Acts
Girls Generation - Gee (Korean - Group)
Sugababes - Push the Button (British - Group)
Taylor Swift - Love Song (American - Solo)
Boys Acts
Big Bang - Last Farewell (Korean - Group)
Westlife - Uptown Girl (British - Group)
Justin Beiber - Baby (American - Solo)

I wanted them to be able to see the diffence between Korean and Westen groups and also been groups and solo artists.  We noted that the boy group videos both had really long introductions before the music started that we did not like.  The Western girl group clothes were too short and their dancing was not in unison like in the kpop videos.
We noted that the videos for the solo artists had much more of a story behind them, more than you usually find in the group videos.  However the Westlife one does have a story also.  The solo ones did not have as much dancing in them, a bit it was different to the kpop type of dancing.

This sounds like a great idea. I teach in an all girls HS and they are crazy about Shinee, Big Bang and the like. I've even had almost arguments about it my classes, and Big Bang/Shinee only had a passing mention in those classes. Also I'd love for some of my students to be able to have a discussion/debate in class.

I might change about the lesson to add in some Western Music elements in there because the more able G2 students produce a good variety of western singers/bands when I asked them about their favourite - Lady Gaga, Westlife(vomit), Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Kula Shaka(I don't know why).

I like the idea of mixing up the Western and Kpop example but I don't think that my poor stomach could stand Westlife or Taylor Swift.

Ha Ha, I know what you mean.  This class was very lucky that they are my favourites so I was prepared to suffer for them. They are all great kids and really happy to express themselves in English so I enjoy giving them a chance to speak their minds.  The only thing they really know is pop, there was one boy who liked some classic rock but none of the other kids had heard of it.

What is the most annoying is that you have to listen to them a couple of times - I had to watch all the videos at home to make sure they had no swear words, kissing or anything in them.  Then you watch them in class and then they get stuck in your head - ahhhh the horror.
