Romanization of Korean names
« on: February 16, 2012, 02:00:55 pm »
So I'm starting my first semester of teaching high school next week and I am hoping to try to learn all the students names. Personally I think its important to know what their Korean names are rather than letting them pick English ones. I've taught elementary in the past and used that system and I thought it was a bit stupid and got out of hand.

I was wondering if there is anywhere I can get information about Romanization. I can read Hangul but thought there might be some kind of definitive list I can use that shows a list of Korean names and what they look like when converted into the Roman alphabet.

I was hoping to make a lesson out of it which might be fun for them but would also help me to remember their names by having them written down in my own alphabet.

No doubt I will have a list of their names in Hangul but reading it slowly or clumsily will probably make them laugh and I will lose their respect. Any ideas?

If you google it Wikipedia has a fairly good page on it. But if you can read Hangeul, the best way to learn your students names correctly AND get better at reading Korean is to just read their names in Korean.
Until next time, I will speak to you next time.
