First lesson
« on: March 02, 2012, 10:23:22 AM »
So I'm just starting out at a high school in Pohang, I've been told by the person I'm replacing not to do an introductory ppt, but everyone here seems to think it's a good idea?!
Also, setting down the rules and such, do you think it's better to set them down the first day? Fifty minutes seems a lot of time to fill with introductions! Discipline seems to be kind of important, especially here  :S

:o<-- this is me at the moment. I am not sure what I am doing, and I am not sure what is going to happen. Nothing has been told to me except find some ice breaker games and use that for the first lesson. Freaking out is an understatement.

Hi
Don't worry about your first class too much!

Just make an introductions about yourself, home town, hobbies, and interests. Then find some games.
I'm doing human Bingo and 2 truths 1 lie activities.

If there's extra time get the students to think of questions to ask you :)

Also smellyhelly welcome to Pohang, I'm a high school teacher in Pohang as well! :D

Hey guys.
Im also in the same boat. Got my first lesson coming up. My co teacher thinks its a good idea to do the introduction so the students know a few things about you which always interests them. My co teacher thinks rules are important to the class and its better to get out the way asap

my co teacher also said introducing yourself is a good idea, and usually what the native teachers do for the first class. She said to allow time for the students to ask you questions as well. I am still very much nervous about it, especially seeing how my co teacher is new to the school.

i think i'm mostly panicking about timing tbh. and the fact they're probably not going to understand me (they've never had a teacher from the uk before).
hopefully it will work out!

I'm pretty worried about my own intro being understood. I try to talk fairly level and clearly, but I think they'll just be staring at me blankly the whole time.

Best just to talk normally and make appropriate PPT aids for them to understand. If nothing else, smile and make jokes.

Hi!  I am a new teacher in Janghyeondong - I had my first class Friday - it was nerve-wracking because I didn't have much planned and my co-teacher wanted me to lead.  I printed off some picture of home/friends/my dog and show those to the class, I wrote down on the board my name and how to pronounce it.  there was little response from the students - I've always heard they would have lots of questions for me - they had one, how old am I?   Then we played a game - I broke them in for groups (it's a class of 35) and picked team leaders - the group had to come up with as many 3 letter english words they knew for 5 minutes.  At the end of the 5 mins, we gave them points and found out who the winning group was.  Then I had them all go around the room and say " my name is _____" and my hobby is _______" - this just about took up the 50 mins.  Shew!  Got through it.  But still nervous about this coming week...and the week after that...and the week after that.... :)

Good Luck!

I'm guessing you may have had your first class by now but an intro lesson is crucial! Whoever the teacher is telling you it's not is setting you up for a fall.  It's your chance to make an impression.  As long as it's interesting, includes some details about where you are from, some cool things you've done, all the awesome places you've been to etc etc....it'll make a great impression.  My intro involves about 20 minutes of me asking them to guess true of false about my age, nationality, siblings and so on and then me turning it on them and doing as another person suggested, 2 true one false with the students.  It gives you a chance to walk around and learn a little about them.  I normally put on a video of me doing something cool like skydiving or whatever you might have.  Making a good impression is good for getting them to find you interesting and motivating.  Going straight to a lesson would be so weird.  I have no idea why someone would tell you to do that.

Best of luck, you'll be fine.  Just dazzle them with your newness, it's not hard!

I just did my intro yesterday. I had one class ooo-ing and aaaah-ing at all my slides and another was just staring blankly at them! Just do your best and try to include your students in your lesson.

I had an introductory powerpoint presentation, unfortunately it was too short (or I might have just gone through it very quickly. So for 20 minutes it was like pulling teeth trying to get the students to ask me any other questions about myself.

@ kim2240 - mine went well in the end, my intro was really short too but i got them playing two truths and a lie afterward and if you explain it really clearly (with examples) they get into it. takes up the rest of the lesson too :)

On top of what other people have said, the students are usually very interested in foreigners, so you can tell them almost anything from your life and they think it's amazing!  Some classes will be more into than others, especially if it is the period right before lunch... all they are thinking is "food." haha.  After you do some intro stuff on yourself, let them ask you questions, depending on the class that can eat up the entire rest of the 50 minutes.  In your intro be sure to include pictures if you can because that really grabs their attention.  While they were asking me questions, I would often ask them questions too so that I get to know them as well.  I also prepared a human bingo game in case my intro and question time didn't fill up the 50 minutes.  But for many classes the intro plus the question time filled up the entire 50 minutes.

Good Luck!!  (Also I attached the bingo sheet that I made... there are several pages to it, but I just printed off the first page and made copies from that)
