Activities for high schoolers who hate games?
« on: March 04, 2012, 05:57:47 PM »
I'm starting a new job at a high school next week (1st grade), and I am looking for some suggestions on what to do for class activities. I have no co-teacher and no way to show movies or powerpoint lessons. I can, however, make copies (yay!). From what the other foreign teacher has told me, the kids have historically been completely uninterested in playing games. Therefore, I'm looking for some ideas on class activities that would keep them entertained. Some things I've thought of:

* Class presentations: Separate kids into groups and have them come up with a presentation of their choice. Each student must speak for at least 2 minutes.
* Comparison of English/Korean high schools: Show some movie clips and/or do a presentation about American high schools and have the kids write a paper on how it compares to their Korean high school experience.
* The ubiquitous bomb game (provided I can find a way to use a classroom with a projector).

As you can see, I have very few ideas on how to cover 4 lessons a week without a book or games. And help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

wow - you don't really have a lot going for you do you?  In the same vein as your presentations idea, I would go with some project-based learning.  Things you can bring in concrete examples of to show them in class, and then might carry you on for a couple of weeks.  Like bring in some ads (cut them out of magazines or newspapers or print some out) and have them create their own products with posters and slogans and everything.  Then have them present in English and use their posters to decorate the room (or the hallway outside in the school if you can swing it).  Knowing that others in the school will be looking too might get them to focus a little more.  You can even have students vote on the product they would most like to buy and give that group a prize.

Honestly, I just started, but if it turns out that my students hate games I am going to dive headfirst into project-learning.
