I teach an English Reading class to just the English department at my school (a Foreign Language Highschool), so the students are fairly high level.
I attached the short story I started with. It's 3 pages. And I attached my teaching notes. For the first class I let them spend it reading the story and asked them to write a short summary of it when they were done. For
But more importantly to me
I want more ideas for short readings! It is really hard to find good short stories that aren't too long or difficult, but also aren't boring.
What short readings do you remember from school or really like?!Thank you!
Here is what I've collected so far:Advice to Youth - Mark Twain (2 page essay. Ironic advice. Humor needs explained)
The Emperor's New Clothes - (4 pages. Student's were familiar with story. A good amount of vocab and phrases to teach. Easily themable.)
Little Things - Raymond Carver (1.5 pages. Great easy short story. Minimalism, realism.)
The Open Window - H.H. Munro (SAKI) (2 pages. My students considered this really
hard.)
Hills Like White Elephants - Ernest Hemingway (Readable, but boring. Significance needs explaining.)
The Bet - Anton Chekhov (Longer Short story, 6 pages. Not hard for students to come up with theme.)
The Veldt - Ray Bradbury (Another longer short story, 8 pages. Great surprising plot. Shocks students.)
