Help!! High School Listening Lesson
« on: December 10, 2010, 02:02:46 PM »
I'm in desperate need of some fresh ideas!

I have to teach listening for three hours at a boys' high school camp.

I need some really fun ideas for listening activities. I have three hours to fill with listening activities.

Thank you so much!

Play a song and give them the lyrics with some blanks. Should kill at least twenty to thirty minutes if you explain vocab they may not know, show the video, play the song twice etc. Generally they really like music too. Or you can show video clips and give them scripts or comprehension questions asking what someone says in reply etc.

Using descriptive vocabulary have the students draw something that you describe, or better yet, that another student describes.  I had students each draw a person, they were encouraged to make the person wacky, and then I had students go to the board and listen to their classmates.  They drew what they heard without looking at the other student's drawing.  The class voted on which drawing they liked best.

This could work with anything, animals, houses, classrooms.  Example- "The classroom has three windows and 10 desks.  The teacher looks like a giraffe.  These are 2 students. etc."

Everyone had fun with the descriptive lesson and it was really funny to see the students' quick artwork.
