High Speaking Exam Topics
« on: April 23, 2012, 11:52:26 AM »
Hi all.

I need some help with speaking topics for my first and second grade high school students. They're using the High School English and High School English I textbooks respectively. It's the first time that I have to do this and I'm at a loss because the topics I can think of will only produce maybe a 2 sentence answer at best.

Eg. What do you want to be when you finish school? Why? This kind of question will produce the answer "I want to be ..... because I want ..." How do I make the topic question one that will ellicit at least a 10 sentence speech?

I look forward to sharing your ideas.

First, i usually make my questions from what I have been teaching them in class every week.  I make my lessons based on what I can use for effective exam questions as well.  I teach them enough to where I can make an interview based exam for the students.  It is usually two or three questions and they only talk for two or three minutes each.  Now, I have to make this usually very simple questions, since the number of students is such a large number.  It is hard to do all 400 to 900 students in one or two weeks of testing.

I will say that you'd better be ready for some hard times ahead when it comes to your exams.  Those were the hardest two weeks I have ever done at public school.  Not to mention, I had to do it for two semesters.  You'd better make sure to have enough red bull on hand because it is going to drain you big time.  Good Luck

Thanks Reb3444.

I'm at a very small high school. 29 first graders and 20 second graders. The teacher wants a speech style exam, not an interview.  :( So I'll keep looking for topics.
