Lesson 8: Princess Backwards
« on: September 22, 2011, 01:51:07 PM »
Hi guys

I am preparing 1st graders lesson 9 and 2nd graders lesson 8. Both of them are about giving directions, which I am interpretting as prepositions. I found this go ok, this too shall pass video; http://youtu.be/qybUFnY7Y8w . This video is full of prepositions and I would love to use it in my lesson.

All I can think of so far is have a fill in the preposition worksheet, maybe something like what I have attached.

I also thought of dividing the class into groups of 3 or 4 and having a competition to see which of them could write down the most subject, preposition, object combinations. For example, ball down ramp, water into bucket, marble through funnel etc. The vocab issue is holding me back on that one.

If you have time to look at the video, please would you give me some suggestions? I feel like there must be a better activity that the ones I have thought of!

Grade 2 Lesson 8 - directions.
Having them practice directions with the powerpoint. I copied the map part from another powerpoint here.
For the next activity, I posted street and avenue names around the classroom. I will then give directions: "walk along ______ avenue and turn ________ at _________ street," which would lead to a student. The first team to name the student will get the point. I'm from NYC, so I attempted to recreate the city in my classroom, haha.
I don't offer support for old lessons and materials I may have uploaded.

If you have questions about my games, (Kpop, charades, golden bells, and etc.) I'll be happy to answer those.

This is to practice the reading section and grammar for Lesson 8.

As a class we play the Body Game Challenge. Draw a circle and a line under it (the head and torso of your stick man) for each team in the class. Write the numbers 1-6 on the board and a body part or facial feature for each number.

1-eye
2-nose
3-ear
4-mouth
5-arm
6-leg

Students must answer a question (see ppt) and if they get it correct, they roll the die. Depending on what number they get, they come to the board and draw that body part. Only one part per roll. In other words, you need to roll 1 twice to get both eyes. If you roll 2 twice, tough luck you just pass or get to re-draw your nose. The team to finish their body first wins. If you run out of time, just count the number of body parts and the team with the most wins.

The kids really enjoy this game because they can make really funny pictures. It's adaptable for any content.

My PPTs are really really basic and simple. I suggest you read through and adjust, accordingly.
