Lesson 2: I Don't Want to Fall Behind
« on: March 21, 2011, 11:09:33 AM »
Grade 3 Lesson 2 This chapter actually provides the opportunity to make some pretty interesting lessons. In one line in the chapter the mother says to the boy " I think you are seriously addicted to computer games and your cell phone."

So I thought I'd make a little lesson about addictions.

Part 1 of grade 3 lesson 2.  This goes over the the "Ready?" "Action!" and "Real-life Speaking" pages.  Introduction of vocabulary, text book exercises, and Real-life speaking activity "I'm so upset with my parents."

Not done with Grade 3 Lesson 1 yet, but here's a video I plan to use for Grade 3 Lesson 2:

The kids have probably seen this already, but it's relevant and funny!

GR 3 Lesson 2 - I don't want to fall behind

I'm still working on this. I did this about advice and the differences between should and must.
For the higher students, I will post slides 18-24 around the class. They will read the scenarios and pick an option for what they will do.
For lower students, I am going to play a pass-the-ball game.

Ok, it's official. The recordings for the 3rd grade book aren't real people. I've been listening to the Action section for L2 and it's totally digital! I'm pretty sure it was the same thing for the Listening stuff in L1 as well. How on earth are the kids supposed to learn real listening and speaking tones when their books sound like robots?

Anyway, I've broken up the chapter into 2 weeks of classes. Here's my game for "you must be/they must be"

On cards, I will write something good or bad, and tape them onto students' backs. They have to walk around the room and say "you must be ______  or your parents must be" followed by other clues. Students must figure out what's on their back within the given time limit. Ex: I'm going to Seoul Dae, I won the lottery, I got an A, My mom yelled at me, etc

Karenology, what did you end up doing for your lesson?

I've been having them do a lot of roleplay, pretending to be parents (or teachers, as some of them don't have parents..:( ).  For the special school days "Zoom into Culture" part, I had my students come up with their own wacky holiday.   Honestly this lesson is a bit of a shambles, but the roleplay stuff has gone over well for the most part.  I can post what I have so far when I go to school tomorrow, but it's not exactly award winning teaching material!

edit: here's my powerpoint and assorted worksheets. Slide 7 links to "Annoying Orange" ,  slide 16 links to "Don't celebrate too early" , and slide 31 links to some Wai Khru video - if you find a more entertaining one, I'd swap that out:

For the "If I were, if I had" worksheet, I gave them prompts.  That probably made it harder, though, because then students had to write what they'd do if they were a pizza bomb or a garbage can.  I did like some of the responses though!  ("I'd marriage a garbage can in rich man's home")

I hate this lesson and can't wait to move on to "I'm Unique Because My Hearing is Bad," lol.

I came in today with a shiny lesson for 3rd year, ch2, only to be told that they won't be on chapter two until sometime next week!  :P Anyone working very slowly through this book? My co let me know that the midterm will only be on the first two chapters!

3rd year, Ch2, low/multi level
Cheer up! A lesson on condolences, praise and agreement
The game is an edit of someone else's congrats game for 2nd year students. You'll need to break your students into teams (I have 6 teams of 5~6 SS) and a dri-erase board+marker for each team.
On the board I have: really sad, very proud, very excited and so happy as a kind of feeling-word bank. This works best with lower level groups - I did it with two classes so far, and they were TOTALLY into the game. We didn't have enough time for the speaking part, and my co it would be too hard this week anyway - if your kids are higher level, I'd do team speaking before the game.

Hey guys,

Here are my lessons for Grade 3 Chapter 2.  I wasn't thrilled about this chapter, it seemed too varied.  So, I focused on "I can't understand" statements and agreeing/disagreeing with them in a two week lesson.

For the "steal, switch, or bust" game the second week you need a box or bag, and paper that has various points, steal, switch, or bust written on them.  I will be using that lesson next week so we'll see how it goes.

****From user STEMARTY**** (Post was split between 2nd year and 3rd year book.)

A fun Donkey Kong themed review game for
Grade 2 Lesson 2 Desserts of the world
Grade 3 Lesson 2 I don't want to fall behind.

Please read the slide notes for game rules.

Donkey Kong is grade 3 review
Donkey Kong gr2 is grade 2 review

Ive had a problem with the triggers working when others download this, (depending on which program you are using) so please do a trial-through run of the game before you try it out on your kids.

I was battling to stretch the content in this chapter over three weeks, so I made some bingo cards using the lyrics from the nagging mom song that someone else posted. There are 20 unique cards, so you'll have two winners - first to say Bingo! wins. The song is pretty fast so I recommend playing it once and then reading through the lyrics slowly yourself.

I also added a whole lot of kpop/kdrama gifs and images to a car racing game that originally came from waygook. The previous teacher gave me a lot of games from waygook so I'm not sure exactly where credit is due. Anyway, finding the images took forever so hopefully this saves you some googling time. I also added wild cards - first to unscramble the word wins.

I'll also throw in the slideshow I made to introduce vocab (including hangul translation), and the one I used for the speaking lesson. I was surprised that the kids had never heard of knock knock jokes. I think a lesson on Western jokes might be good for after-school! Anyway...

This chapter sucks.

I made a review ppt with a memory game at the end. For the game, basically, you give the students 5 to 10 seconds to look at the "cards" (pictures) that represent a phrase we've learned in lesson 2 then click next so they disappear. They then have to write the phrases down on the answer sheet as they saw them. Repeat for each level then review the answers together. I make them change papers before checking the answers so they don't cheat. There are more to remember each level. It's pretty basic but they enjoy the challenge of a memory task and the higher or lower level your students are you can reduce/increase the time they have to look at it.

I also made a kaboom game to review. You start with one team. They make an appropriate sentence for the picture and receive a point. They then decide whether to "keep going" or "pass it on". If the next slide is another picture they can get another point for making a sentence but if it's a 'kaboom' their score goes down to zero so they have to weigh up how many turns to take before pasing it on to the next team. Like a ticking time bomb.

Neither of these powerpoints were of my original making I've just used a mix of other people's stuff and added some different pictures.

Nothing special but given how little there is for this lesson it may help someone out.

I put together a PP using a multitude of different PPs.

I haven't done this lesson yet but I have to pull this chapter into 3 lessons so I've done one using 2nd conditional.

Attached is a worksheet that put together a bunch of different materials I've found on here and adapted the activities.
