haven't taught yet this week either.

got the schedule this morning, best looking schedule in my 4years here.

16 classes a week...  (after school schedule to come, last year it was 2/week - hopefully this year will be similar)

the only thing better than the public school job is the university gig.  They get an absurd amount of time off per year!!!  i don't think i want that job tho, i might never leave this place.

I got ya beat with only 14 classes - only one today.  However, the grass is always greener. I really enjoy teaching, and with my role being diminished here (see new thread), I'm really bored.  I guess I'm gonna try and get some reading done.

First week of no classes here, I think I have a day of classes from my lesson plan next week, possibly a second day using a different plan. No one is saying. Slowly been piecing together what is expected of me this week (first time teacher.) Apparently my class time is supposed to be "fun" -- not sure what kind of curriculum to include my lesson plans though. I'd be totally lost without waygook. First lesson plan is done, and relatively easy because it's introduction stuff. Not sure where to go from there.

A quick tip - if you're at a school without a dedicated co-teacher you work with for every class, offer to put together your own schedule! Your head co-teacher might not like you asking as it's supposed to be his/her responsibility, but if you think they're unlikely to be offended by your offer of help then go ahead. You only need to be able to read the names of your co-teachers in Korean on the general school schedule. I've done this the last 3 semesters at my school and have always have a light lesson load on Mondays as a result   8)

Edit: just noticed this is in the high school forum. I'm a middle school teacher... not sure if high schools are organised in the same way.

Rules and expectations or introduce a rewards system if you're going to go that route.  I made a lesson out of rules (should/shouldn't) and they kids and I brainstormed rules not just for them in the classroom, but also their expectations of me as a teacher - some surprisingly good ones in broken English...

I'm also supposed to be the "fun" teacher (which my KT basically described as a game lady), but at the same time I see the students at my main school more often than the Korean teacher does so I have to walk a fine line between education and entertainment, otherwise my already low performing students will be hopelessly prepared for their exams.  Basically I try to spend 10-15 minutes, and no more, on the introduction of something new and then bring as fun of an activity out of it as I can.  Sometimes this means skits, posters, games, whatever I can to try and not make English class a complete bore.

Don't forget to occasionally through in some Western culture stuff.  I did a lesson on St. Patrick's Day last year that my students went nuts for (they kept wanting to watch the video of the Chicago River being dyed green), and we did some goofy activities and games after.  That kind of thing can break up monotony really well.

And after two days of introduction & rules lessons, today my classes have been cancelled so that the students can do their first standardized test of the year.

looks like I'm a substitute babysitter for the high school seniors today and tomorrow.  My real classes will be starting next week.
