For those who would like to try the toilet paper fiasco, but
would like to limit the toilet humor in the classroom, try this
alternative: instead of asking the students to take sheets from
a roll of toilet paper, pass around a bowl of small candies such
as M&M's and ask the students to take as many as they would like,
but not to eat them yet. Then ask each student to say something
about themselves in English for every piece of candy that they
have taken.

Tell the group that they will know 1 thing more about every person in the room at the end of this exercise!!

Ask them to individually to write down 2 things about themselves that the other in the group will not know about them - 1 true & 1 false.
You have these pre-pepared for yourself.

EG.
I am a twin
I can speak Spanish

Once everyone has done.
Starting with yourself (trainer) tell your truth and lie.
The next person then speaks their truth and lie then has to guess the lie or the previous person. You continue around the room in this manner.

As the trainer you can either guess the lie of the last person in the group or open it up to the group to guess the lie.

I have used this many times to great effect and remains one of my favorites.

You can also do the ball game.  Works best with a volleyball.  Write a question on each color and wherever student's right thumb lands is what they answer.  Works well and you can put a lot of questions, or little, depending on level.

My favorite ice breaker:

The whole class needs to count to however many students there are in the class (example: 22 students, count to 22) by saying out loud one number at a time, one student at a time, without looking or signaling at other students. If two students speak at the same time, they have to start over until they reach the final number!

I tried a game where the students made two sets of two rows and had to introduce themselves to each person in front of them and then one row would run to the back.  The row that had the person back to where they started won!

Just wondering how people feel about giving their students English names?
