hello!!!

i am lucky enough to be teaching at an arts high school where most of my students are clever, outgoing, and interested in english. however, twice a week, i teach a class without any textbook at all...for high school grade 2 students very interested in their instruments or art and not interested in anything academic.

i would like to create a class based on american (i am american, obviously) film, tv, travel, poetry, cooking, etc. but i need to do it in a way where they get to talk and don't just sit around reading and watching.

any ideas would be so greatly appreciated!

have a great day, y'all!

Honestly... I would recommend buying the movies High School musical 1-3. I showed them to my lower level middle school kids and they were flabbergasted! It is American. Has a great story line for teenagers. It is musical and easy to follow. HIGHLY recommend this... Make you you get a version with both English and Korean subtitles. There are so many factors to talk about in class. Especially the differences in Eastern and Western cultures.

I'm attaching a very rough outline for an American culture class I'm preparing.

HSM and pop culture will probably interest them much more than Thanksgiving or Independence Day. My students of all levels have loved lessons I've done on Justin Bieber and Avril Lavigne (I know they're not officially Americans but the States can have them).

Can you tell me how you set up the class? I am curious as to how and what you discussed about. Thanks!

If it's an arts high school, get them to debate which art form allows you to express yourself more - it forces them to motivate their answers since there is no correct answer.

Also, they could do mini presentations on influential people in their art form (art, music, drama, dancers) which could be done individually or in groups.

Ask them to discuss cultural influences in different art forms.

Give them a project where they have to compare American and Korean school culture using their particular art form.
