High school newspaper clubs?
« on: March 10, 2011, 11:37:23 AM »
Does anyone have a newspaper club at their school? I have sort of been thrust into leading my school's and am just wondering about other teacher's experience. I can already predict some challenges, not the least of which being a clueless colleague blindly running it with me. I had offered to assist and instead have had students join what they thought was "my club" so I want to do the best I can. Trouble is, I wasn't ready for the first meeting (since I was told about it a minute before). For our next meeting, I've made the powerpoint below explaining briefly how to write a newspaper article, but am wondering about what your experiences may have been. (The last two slides are blank, since I have no activity thought up yet). Cheers

I haven't actually led one myself but I was collecting some things to do a class on newspaper writing. I'll attach them here, with thanks going to the origial creators from whichever websites I pulled them off of.

Some of it is just some grammar stuff I was going to enphasize for when they write, and then two are specifically related to newpapers.

I did do some editing last year for some students who were submitting English articles for the school yearbook. They were pretty good.

Try HSJ.org (I think that's the link) - it will help with lesson plan ideas! (Click on the 'Teachers' link)

I took a newspaper club for 1st and 2nd grade girls and the way I worked it was to elect a leader for each grade (perhaps with highest english ability )and make them an editor. The students would then write on any subject they liked and submit it to the editor who would correct it, then pass it on to me for final editing.
