Environment themed Summer Camp!
« on: June 27, 2013, 01:40:27 PM »
Hello My Co and I are looking to have a environment themed Summer camp (HighSchool).

It will be a week long 2 hrs a day with above average language ability

i am looking for some ideas of what we can do.
We really want to put emphasis on speaking everyday.
The main focus idea that we have come up with is that the students will create a poster that compares/contrasts between Korea and other countries.  On the last day the students will give a presentation of their findings.

I will likely give a presentation on the environment (highlighting Global warming)  Keeping it to 15-20 min on the first day

perhaps an open discussion after but with 20 or so students it will be difficult to monitor.

We also discussed some kind of field trip.  The only thing I can think of is garbage collection but that sounds like more of a punishment than a learning experience

Any ideas what else we can do?

I did a book collection and donation with my middle schoolers last year. Find a rural library, school or orphanage that you can donate those books to. Teach the importance of not only recycling, but reusing as well!

Another thing we did was a newspaper fashion show. We made outfits with tape and newspaper, which were modeled off of different cultural outfits from around the world. They were pretty cool! My high schoolers are art students, so I'm super excited to see what they come up with!

As well as focusing on Global Warming, you could have a secondary focus on water quality or the importance of water, showing contrasting images from the around the world (Countries experiencing drought-like conditions vs. countries experiencing flooding quite regularly).

Take the students to the nearest river and get each group of say 2 student to make a water filter using some everyday items like an empty water bottle, some cotton wool, pebbles and sand. There are plenty of resources available on the net to aid you in this project.
If you ask the science the science department in your school, you be able to get your hands on allum, a clarifying agent that will make the murky water look incredibly clean and healthy. IT ISN'T!!! DO NOT LET THE KIDS DRINK THE WATER!!!!

Just an idea. I was in the field of environmental education back home and this was always a winner with students, especially coming from Africa.

How about getting them into teams to research and debate the pro's and con's of green energy..obviously give the stronger Ss the cons, cos they are harder to argue!

For field trip you could get them out asking questionnaires to the public about their 'green behaviors' (do they recycle/do they take the bus etc).  You could easily fill a class just devising the questionnaires alone!  And then looking at the results, you could try and have open class brainstorm sesh to think of ways to promote green living...

Other ideas for getting out, there has to be some 'green project' in Busan right?  Or maybe if you're stuck, the regeneration of Gamcheon Art village...maybe!

I'm pretty sure I saw a Carbon Footprint lesson here on Waygook too...check that out and stretch/modify it...

Good luck!

Here's the link to some materials the EPA has set up for ESL adult learners..but they also have it put into 3 different levels. I havn't looked yet but maybe it can help you.

http://www.epa.gov/osw/education/pdfs/tesol.pdf

Also http://www.stopwaste.org/home/index.asp?page=1078 <--has some detailed lesson plans..I think about 15 for younger learners.

If you cover anything like conservation you could try to find some public gardens, an aquarium, or a zoo to visit...

I don't have any speaking activity ideas... sorry.

This is an absolutely stunningly beautiful video that looks at our beautiful planet and some of the great environmental threats.

Also when my classes made environmental posters they had to search for recycled materials to make them with. There were some fantastic results.
