Billboard Chart Game 2.0
« on: September 12, 2013, 01:03:12 PM »
I'm sure many of you have used the excellent Billboard Chart game (http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,35776.msg240977.html#msg240977) that was put on here a year or so ago, I know I have. Anyway as it has been so popular with my students I made a new version. I have only added 10 songs as I use it for 1 50minute class. Also I found that my students never needed the lyric videos so I have done away with those.

I run my class by giving teams of 4-5 a whiteboard which they can write the words on, then at the end of the song I ask them what each blank word is. The first correct team gets the point (1 point for 1 word), obviously if one team is pulling a head by too much I rig the game and start choosing other teams to keep the points even.

The first game included handouts, I seldom use handouts and I never needed them for this game so there are none included. It would be easy enough to make some if you need them.

These song choices are amazing!  I can't get the ppt to download.  Says the link is broken, even after saving all to my googledrive.  :(

Hi, I tried to attach the PPT here for you but the file is too big. I tested the google drive link, whilst logged out of my google account, and it downloaded just fine (you can't see the preview but if you look at the bottom right of your screen you'll still see the download button).

Has anyone else had this problem?

I used embedded YouTube videos to get the file size down. A lot of the official videos did not allow linking so I used alternatives. Also added a bit of instrumental Billy Jean to the intro just for fun.

* Nov 20, 2013. Some of the embedded youtube clips no longer work due to rights issues.

Awesome stuff guys!

An idea:
I used the first version of the Billboard in one of my elementary camps last year. Since some of the students are really low-level, I made an alphabetical list of all of the fill-in-the-blank words from all of the songs and gave the students a 25 square Bingo board.

Before they listened to any of the songs, I had the students choose any 25 words from the list and write them on their boards. I then played the songs in random order. The students crossed words off their boards as the words showed up in the songs. The first student to get Bingo won.

***I've decided to use this for my winter camp. I took Zeeg's version and added my bingo game and some of the intro info from the frist Billboard PPT to it. Here's the final product.

I tested this on my after-school class today, and it appears that some of the links in the version Zeegs made don't work.

Here's the Bingo version (on Zeegs' version) with the videos used by the OP.

***You need to download the videos from the first post in this thread for this to work.

Yeah, just checked, looks like a few had copyright take downs, or at least disabled embedding.

These are cool, but...

I find the choice of "Get Lucky" and "We Can't Stop" to be highly inappropriate. Especially "Get Lucky". I don't know about your kids, but mine are definitely good enough at English and old enough to understand what that means. Also, is it really a good idea to show songs about drinking and partying to underage kids that live in a culture of alcoholism? Just my opinion, but I think it's worth thinking about...

Also, the slides for Pink, Aloe Blacc, and Once Direction don't work in Zeeg's ppt. I haven't tried the OP's.

They did work at the time, nothing lasts forever. I don't really use pop songs in my classes. Maybe the kids will get something from the songs they shouldn't, but kpop is a bit racy despite the sugary sounds and the kids in my school go around singing songs like these. I remember last year the kids were obsessed with LMFAO, and that wasn't coming from my class.

Peasgoodnonsuch thanks for your feedback. I completely disagree, I teach boys and we are very open in what we talk about together. By not discussing such things all we do is make them more taboo and more desirable. That's my opinion. I carefully consider the song choices and music videos that I use.

Hey zeegs,

I was hoping you might provide some instruction on how to embed new videos into the billboard chart game. I am trying to add some of my own selections and have found it quite difficult. If anybody else feels that they can weigh in, it would be much appreciated.

thanks!!

If you just want to add a youtube video, check out the authorstream add-on for Powerpoint. It makes it really simple. http://www.authorstream.com/desktop/
