My English Newspaper
« on: November 13, 2013, 12:30:19 PM »
I know many people have asked questions about starting their own English newspapers. I have just published my school's third ever volume (I started the club, 3 years ago). Here is a link to check it out if you're interested:

That's a really impressive production, great design and theme!

Just wondering - what program did you use to design it? I have a newspaper to assemble before Christmas in my high school: the articles and pictures are flying in but I haven't thought about design yet.

Some great articles in yours, by the way. Particularly from the student who wrote about the Korean Education System.

Wow that's awesome. Job well done.  How did you get your students motivated?  My co-teacher has our English club write newspaper too but it's like pulling teeth.  I'm not sure how the end version looks as this is my first few months here.  But my high school girls hate writing for it.  Also, how good was their writing before you edited it?   Even my advanced students don't write very well and I'm always torn on how much to edit especially since they don't usually take my editing as an opportunity to learn.

Hi, thanks for your feedba

Redsoup: Our publisher does the actual design work, all we do is submit the essays and photos. We have quite a big budget so yeah. I'll be sure to pass on the praise to the student who wrote that essay! ( I was also very impressed by it)

Bird212: It is also difficult for me, basically we bribe them with gift vouchers. Most of the writing was not very good, except a few essays such as the one about the Korean education system and another couple. I sit down at my computer and re write each essay. In my first year of doing the paper I would edit, give it back to students to rewrite, then edit again. Essentially I still ended up rewriting it but just over a longer time! which is why I now just rewrite it from the get go. I show the students the essay, ask them if there are any changes they'd like to make and if there's any parts that I might have misunderstood I check with them to check it was their meaning.
Basically, I make sure that the essay is 100% the student's original idea, I just make it grammatical. I try to use most of the original vocab to, and where I have to add things I make sure it sticks to what sort of vocab the students already used.

I have just finished editing our entire school paper. My god I have never felt so stressed in my life. Did you not get frustrated at all? I have had to edit over 40 articles and I feel it is basically my work as so much needed to be edited :( I understand it needs to be grammatically correct but I also feel it takes away completely from the authenticity of the article. I would love to know your view on this as I seem to struggle to understand the point in doing a newspaper if the foreign teacher is just going to edit the entire thing . Sounds like you are a champion at what you do. The last 2 months have been far too stressful for my liking.

This is one of the reasons I sat down with my coworkers and talked about just how unfeasible a newspaper is.  I looked at the work and couldn't have used any of it.  I told them it wasn't my job to write the entire newspaper.  I agreed I would edit the work if it was editable, not write articles from scratch for a 'student paper'.  This was almost a year ago and I haven't heard about it since (and have since been renewed ^^)  Although I'm in middle school.

haha I know your feeling. I usually have around 20 articles to edit. Due to this being an online forum I don't want to say too much but I agree with the approach Westmeetseast took. Overall I'm very proud of the three newspapers we have published but it's hard to motivate students and myself to get it done. The newspapers look great and it is student writing, all be it heavily edited by me.

When I was told we were going to write the newspaper, and I was allotting jobs to the students, the first thing I did was choose the student with the highest level of English to be 'Editor'. She gathers the other students' articles, checks them for errors and then we sit down together and I re-correct them. It helps, as she makes sense of some of the garbage that is submitted, and it saves me a lot of time and stress!

A great idea, if only my students had the time for that. My best students are simply too busy. Maybe I need to make better use of the 2 hours of club time every Friday afternoon... but the last thing me, or the students feel like doing then is 2 hours of hard writing work.

One of my co-teacher's was a journalist in the past.  He has taken it upon himself to create the school newspaper.  I acted as the editor for English articles this year.

My High School use their Newspaper as a marketing tool for prospective students so expect the articles to be perfect. However the English in the articles is too high a level for regular students to read, so its not really serving the purpose that it should.

We published our first English newspaper after winter camp. This is the grade 2 students'effort and I am really pleased with the result. We did everything ourselves, design, typing, set up and editing. They didn't like the writing part during the process but were proud of the result.

Nancy that is fantastic!

Like lukamodric mine is used as a marketing tool and also as a good thing on students records for getting into university. I mean the writing is 90% the students but some pretty heavy editing gets done by yours truly.

Thanks James! Coming from someone with a paper as wonderful as yours, I will take that as quite a compliment and will pass it along to the kids. I think I may have started something as there is now talk of making the paper an ongoing thing rather than just a camp project. No good deed.......
