I have gotten some mileage out of using Korean television shows and movies as a starting point for conversation with my high school classes. I was surprised how fruitful it can be to pick shows that are popular and well-liked.
For example, with the Korean movie Harmony, many of my high school students, but not all, had seen the movie. We were able to talk about the plot, characters (and character backgrounds), hairstyles, actors and actresses.
It's been similar with comedy shows like One Night Two Days.
I am considering using episodes from the recent drama series Secret Garden (available with English subtitles on youtube). Just playing music from that show to my students and showing pictures of the actors and actresses really gets some enthusiasm going and a willingness to try to express in English and learn how to say things.
So here's my question: Would you consider Secret Garden to be too mature (for high school students)? I could imagine using a few video clips. I think I would have to make sure to avoid some of the more intimate scenes.
Anyone else had success using popular Korean visual media in the classroom? Any suggestions?
