2014 Grade 3 Daekyo 1 - 1. Hi, I'm Jinsu
« on: March 14, 2014, 09:52:29 AM »
Let's get this started.

Period 1, Change and Repeat: I divided the class into two groups and had them form two lines facing each other.
(Like this -------->  <---------- ) One group is Jinsu and the other group is Kelly. The two at the front of the line make the conversation. ("Hi. I'm Jinsu." "Hello, my name is Kelly.") When they are finished, they go to the end of their lines and the next two make the conversation. Repeat again for the second Change and Repeat.

Instead of Listen and Play: The students sit in a circle. Give the first student a ball (choose a higher-level student). The first student says "My name is _____." and passes the ball. The second student receives the ball, says, “Hello, [first student’s name],” turns to the next student and says, "My name is ______." They pass the ball around the circle like this until the entire class is finished. Practice once and correct their speaking. Time the next two rounds and see if they can beat their first time. The students were willing to play this many times. Change it up by reversing the direction of the ball, playing boys versus girls, and using two balls at once. My fastest class was able to do it in 52 seconds with 20 students, so they get really good at it.

Both of these activities were reaaally helpful for their speaking, both in confidence and ability. The ones that started out quietly were eventually speaking strongly. Just make sure that during the game the students who aren't speaking are either quietly paying attention or helping out their peers. Side conversations really take away from their learning.

Hello, I've got two game. The first game is for part two of the lesson. The game goes over the phrase, "Hello/Hi. My name is _____." You can use "I'm _____" if you choose. Basically the students see the hidden picture, you click the screen to make the squares disappear one by one, when a student or a group has their hands raise, they should answer "Hello/Hi. My name is Batman." or whatever the picture is.

The second game is for part three of the lesson covering the alphabet. Its a simple pass he ball/bomb game. Make groups. Students see the phrase they are supposed to say, you click the next screen to start the bomb, toss a group a ball and they say the phrase they were given before throwing it to another group and repeat. When the bomb goes off, that group gets an X or whatever you want to impose. ** Please note my co teacher wanted them to review the letters A-H, not the standard A-D. Please alter as you see fit.

These are the PPTs I used for the first lesson. Some of the material is credited to other people. Thank you.

Included are the vocabulary for lesson 1, a PPT of the characters, a spinner game with the characters faces, and a ghostbusters PPT game of the characters.

For the Spinner and Ghostbusters, I had the students say "Hi/Hello! My name is ____."

The candy in the spinner game was worth two points.

Finally happy to see I am not the only one using this book.  Impressions of the new book?  I dont really like it.  I covered ABC's at length last yr with afterschool classes and now its just a review...so a little boring.  And I have rural kids.  The second part of the book is a little better.  Can't point out anything since they havent even given me a book yet!

Hi, I added a few more slides to the 'Hello my name is' PPT, the kids loved it!, especially being able to say "Hello my name is Elsa/Iron man". I also changed a slide from another lesson, in this PPT pronunciation and talking is the general key. The slide is self explanatory and the kids especially love seeing who is the ultimate rock paper scissor winner... Girls or Boys! anyway have fun!

There is also a great and very easy song to practice the main expressions. Hello, goodbye and Nice to meet you. It's super easy AND they love it!

This is a sheet of 30 name cards using characters the kids should mostly be familiar with (with Korean and English).  I had gave them each a card and had them walk around, introducing themselves to each other and changing cards as they went.  They enjoyed it.

The second file is a basic ppt to introduce the book characters.

Sorry forgot to upload for lesson 1.3.  Here is the review of Key Expressions and a word game that my kids really loved.  It has all the rules and it is a great way to keep the kids interested in the class.

I think the new book is okay.  My kids seem to like it so I'm happy about that.

Here is an activity for the READ ABC section where students have to guess letter A, B, C or D. When students see slide I make the sound of the letter and the students guess what letter. Students then say the letter, the sound, and the word.

I've modified dru20081's PowerPoint (thanks!) to use as an overall review for Lesson 1, now that my classes have finished the textbook. There's a recap of key expressions, dialogue practice for the students to do in pairs, a word brainstorming activity to do in groups, and a silly name memory game. Feel free to change it further :)

Here are my lesson plans for periods 1 & 2. It's for a fairly low level class.

The power point is for a mingle game which you could use for period 2 or maybe move to period 4. It has some character cards you can print out so the students can introduce themselves as those characters.  I have two sets of cards: one is for the textbook characters and the other are some famous characters they probably already know. Students should stand up and introduce themselves to each other using the key expressions and you can either have them try to find all the other students with the same card or to form groups with 1 of each character. Just re-disperse the cards for a 2nd round.
