Haiku/Syllables Part 2 Ideas
« on: April 09, 2014, 06:18:13 PM »
So I just finished the first of a 2-part lesson on Haikus.  The first part I explained the concept of syllables, and did some practice exercises.  Then, I introduced Haikus and did a word-scramble game with them before setting them loose on writing their own Haikus.  I had the students choose a topic for their Haiku, and then write out a bunch of words related to the topic and the number of syllables they had, to make it easier for them to write out their Haiku.  Most students did not finish their Haiku in that class, so the next class, students will finish their Haiku.  We're going to have a vote on which they think is the best Haiku (to give them extra motivation to work).  But, that might take, at most, half the class (by the time you add in the warm-up activities).  So, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of activities or games you can do related to Haikus or counting syllables.  Thoughts?

This is always a fun one.

Give this site a gander for more haiku and creative writing ideas.

His stuff is really concise and well planned.

As far as syllables, I couldn't find any of the I prepared for my previous students, but a really easy trick for students to count syllables in a word is to put their hand to their chin and count how many times their mouth opens. The amount of times is your syllable count. Another is to talk like a robot. When they talk like a robot it makes the syllable count more apparent. There are some good videos online for that. If I find anything good I'll send it your way :)

A great link and I think that the writing methods that are used are great for groups of students and students with more advanced skills in English. Thanks for posting this.

If you're looking for anymore ideas when teaching Haiku's, I prepared a really simple to follow PPT and activities.

After working with students to make their own Haiku's (very last activity)
I made bookmarks and laminated them for the students; a little gift for their hard efforts.

hope it helps :D
