I made this Murder Mystery over 2 weeks - it was inspired by Who killed Alfred but I think it is more comprehensive and you have to use a bit of deduction and intuition to come to the conclusion. This lesson will last 2 X 50 minute lessons.

It is complicated but worth it. No evidence by itself points directly to the accused but with all evidence together the crime can be solved

Who killed Minsun - an adaptation of a BBC drama for ESL purposes

Step one
1. Pin the five witness statements around the classroom
1. Go through the prezi up until they have to find motives and suspects.

a) elicit what kind of Motives you need to Kill - hate, revenge, jealousy etc..
b) pre-teach the words Forensics and illegitimate (Korean is wrong on my prezi - google!!) and crime scene.

2. Divide into groups. Give them a copy of

a) character profiles
b) floor plan - crime scene
c) worksheet 1

3. Tell them to read with dictionaries if needed

4. Expain Statements are round the room and they must use this in conjunction with the profiles to fill out work sheet 1.

a) check work in class

5. Tell them a coroners report is now available - give it to them

a) also get Clue 1 and say new evidence is available - pin to the wall in the class room for groups to peruse.

b) give them worksheet 2 to fill out - Check once completed

6. Now go to prezi and show them the Professor Seo evidence - also it says that the coroners want to re-eaxm. Give them re-examination report

a) tell them new evidence has come up. Put clue 2 and Dukgil's denial on the board.
b) give them work sheet 3 - fill out and check with the class

THIS SHOULD TAKE UP ONE LESSON

7. Now tell them that more evidence is available
a) give them clue 3 on the wall - also put clue 2.2 up
b) show them the finger print evidence in Prezi
c) give them worksheet 4 to fill out

8. Now show them the revelation of Dukgil's news story in Prezi
a) Show them the CCTV footage and the revelation of the stains from the forensic labs
 b) Give them Clue 4 at the back of the room
c) Give them worksheet 5 to fillout and check.

9. Now give them the final clue at the back clue number 5
a) Also give them the itemized phone bill
b) Give them worksheet 6 and let them solve the crime.

I have been doing it to classes of 30-40 mixed ability.

I have excellent classes. I normally drop the worksheets for really low level.

Also on worksheet one they obviously do not have enough clues - I elicit whats missing -

Time of death
How
Forensics
Why

Also tell them that all suspects could easily get in the room.
Change Won Dukgil from a Groundsman to a Repair man - He has keys to all the rooms
Sehwa is a roommate
Myongjin is a friend and could eaily have arranged a meeting in her room
Same goes with Rakhyeon
Only person who would have had trouble getting in the room is Professor Seo

Next week I am concluding the mystery/ Every student wants to know who did it. I like that the suspense carries through to two lessons and you can keep some continuation.


When the students are going round the room I play Pharrell's song happy. It energies them for some reason. I hope that anyone who hates the song does not think less of me :)

Thanks for your kind comment - treat like a K Drama - Also I think they are needed in the context of the drama. They carry the narrative forward and are devices to move attention away from the actual killer Sehwa.

I adapted from a BBC play - actually in the bbc play it was easier and more obvious who the killer was (if it is not obvious enough in this one). The story was changed to suit a korean audience with certain evidence tailored to my version of the story.

I don't have access to prezi in my classroom so I changed this into a powerpoint presentation.  I also combined the witness statements and clues into single documents in case you want that option.  I switch classrooms all day so it's harder for me to set up and take down clues and having them on single pages is easier.  I did change a few names and pictures and corrected the mistakes that were stated earlier but otherwise the content is the same.

I haven't taught this yet but plan to teach it next week and will update on how it goes.  I hope the new files are helpful!
