Lessons on voting or elections.
« on: May 15, 2014, 11:03:09 AM »
Election Day is three weeks away.

Has anyone done lessons on voting or elections?

I have searched the relevant key words on waygook and haven’t found anything.
I have an idea now to use a few photos of last year’s student government campaign. I will go through the campaign issues that the students ran on. (I have pictures of the campaign posters that they can help me translate.) And maybe let the class add some issues. Then I’m thinking that I will pass out something like a sports bracket, I have 16 issues. The students will fill it out, then we will have a class vote for each matchup, raising hands or maybe passing around a ballot box, to find the most important issue.

The students with a perfect bracket will win a prize.

I’m just brainstorming, let me know what you think.

Here are the campaign issues from last year. There were three different teams running but I mixed their issues together.
1.   Activate student suggestions
2.   Rewards for good behavior
3.   Flavored milk twice a week. (banana, strawberry, chocolate)
4.   Student court
5.   Propose cell phone use
6.   Propose sports competitions
7.   Cups at the drinking fountains.
8.   Replace lockers.
9.   Desk shields (to prevent seeing up skirts)
10.   Soap and fragrance in the bathrooms
11.   Morning bread
12.   Student enforced dress code
13.   Propose bus card machine and ATM in school.
14.   Propose tissue in the classrooms
15.   Fight for boys to wear shorts in summer
16.   Propose game day. (non-sport type games)

Hey tsarotu, thanks for the idea!  Using some parts of your lesson, I created my own.  Safe to say that it's been one of the most successful lessons I've had recently.  Probably should say that mine is for higher-level classes.

Since we had student elections last week and there will be local elections nation-wide next week, I thought this was really timely.

I started the class by talking about voting and issues, and voting ON issues.  Then, I explained the issues (e.g. there should be free milk and bread in the morning for students) that I made up for the students to vote on.  Then the students voted.  I asked the class three questions: 1. Which issue is the most important? Why?;  2.  Which issue is the least important? Why?; and 3. Which issue is the most controversial?

Then the students had a debate on the most controversial issue.  I split them into two groups, and then split those two groups into sub-groups.  After 10-15 minutes of discussion, I had both groups report back to me on the reasons why they thought their side of the issue was correct.

Feel free to use!

Thank you for sharing. I also came up with an activity. It only runs about 35 minutes. I fill the rest of the time looking at some other school pictures. The campaign issues are from my school, but they are probably generic enough for any school. There hasn’t been a consistent winner so far. Every class is different. So, it is interesting.
