open class--out of ideas!
« on: May 18, 2014, 09:54:00 PM »
So I have an open class.  Previously I submitted a lesson plan which I can no longer use because the audio doesn't work in my classroom, and I needed it for my lesson.  What are some good things I can do?

It's with an academic high school class (all girls), so fairly advanced and high ability.  I've already used all the great lessons this semester--inventions, do an infomercial, idiom dialogues, etc. but now I need something else!  Lesson plan is due Monday or Tuesday.

What do you suggest?

how about something on food and restaurants? i know it's maybe a bit boring but they generally like to see lots of student speaking time in open classes. food and restaurants gives you a good opportunity to do that by using information gap activities, getting students to practice ordering food etc.

you could do an activity where students create their own menu in groups, then half the students in each group act as 'waiters' and have to take orders from other teams. the other half stay behind and they are the 'customers' and have to give orders to the waiters. then after 5-10 mins they change roles.

eslflow.com has some good stuff on food and restaurants: http://www.eslflow.com/foodrestaurantlessonplans.html

alternatively, there's also some decent stuff there on transportation and technology:

Thanks johnny russian, they have some decent role plays on there--I really like to get my students up and speaking, especially for an open class.

6 Thinking Hats is a good lesson for high levels that should demo well.  I'd recommend running through it with another class first, though.

I have open classes for high school of a high level. I teach debate, conversation and writing. Debate is great because you can discuss an article before giving them preperation time for the next lesson debate proper. You can explore interesting topics that maybe you wouldn't create a lesson on.

The only problem is you will need around 4 weeks of lessons teaching basic debate skills before you can begin. Also organisation of debate teams and formats can be a pain in the ass depending on the class. I try and get the non participating teams to judge the other teams o in theory everyone is always involved.

lukamodric, that's actually a good idea for including the whole class in a debate.  My advanced classes are upwards of 30 students so though I've wanted to hold debates I've always wondered how to make it work best.  Thanks!

I have a series of debate skills power points, if you need them I will try and make time to upload them.  For some classes who aren't that interested in studying English, the debate skills were more successful than actual debates  ;D

Here are some of the debate skills I put together.  Some of them need work sheets to go with them but you can quickly make them up.
