Lesson on body image - can I use this video?
« on: May 26, 2014, 11:41:14 AM »
I am working on a lesson on body image and wanted to include a music video. The two that instantly came to mind were Beautiful by Christina Aguilera and Unpretty by TLC. There are two problems with the videos, though, which I would like your opinion on.

In the Beautiful video, there are two men making out. I'm pretty sure even if it were a heterosexual couple, some of my co-teachers may have an issue with it. I've used images and videos of gay couples in my classes before, but never of them kissing. This is the best video, though, as there are examples of boys and girls with body image issues.

The video for Unpretty is safer, but it has a breast augmentation scene.

I would like your opinions first, then I'll ask my main coT.

If you know of any other music videos that tackle this topic, please post.

Thanks!

The two videos:

Christina's video- definitely NO.

And the TLC one, probably not either. There's a few iffy images and there's also the fact to consider that the students will have a pretty hard time understanding the lyrics.

Go with beautiful, I thought it was wonderful, nice slow lyrics that you can explain if needed and nothing bad in it.

I mean have you seen K-Pop, Christina Agulaiafae is a hundred times more tame than any K-POP vid out.

Also have you ever stepped foot into your classrooms? You are worried bout showing boys kissing? I've seen boys lay their heads in each others laps, sit on their laps, and yes lots and lots of kissing from both boys and girls.

Showing that kind of material in a mature way is fine. Now if you show it and say "THIS IS BAD" or "LOOK LOL LOL SO FUNNEH!". then yeah no good.

Also possible showing; GLAM: In Front of the Mirror.

Have you looked over Leo Fuchigami's lesson on beauty? i've used a modified version of his lesson in my classroom. Several of the videos that are included may prove useful to you but like you mentioned the dove "onslaught" video has some "risque" things. That said i think a lot of that comes down how you as the teacher approach it and manage your classroom. If you can move past the initial inevitable responses to something a little deeper and actually get them thinking in the direction you're trying to teach then go for it.

links included for convenience.
