1st & 2nd Conditional: Culminating Activity Ideas
« on: June 01, 2014, 03:27:29 PM »
So, I've taught two lessons, one in the 1st conditional and one on the second, both with lots if guided practice.  So, I'd like to end the unit with a third lesson that involves productive activities, especially those that involve speaking.  I've had a lot of success using speaking games like battleship and connect-4, but I've already used those quite a bit, and they don't fit the target language well in this case.  Anyone have ideas?  I need something that's really going to grab their interest.

One thing I'm thinking if is a "teacher interview" where students can write and ask me hypothetical questions.  A student did this spotaneously in one if my lessons, and the students got a big kick out of it.

I tried using the "game show" idea where students tried to guess their teammate's answer to hypothetical question, but students didn't seem very engaged by this.  Any other ideas?

In a book I used previously back home for teaching, there was a section for the 2nd conditional.

It set up hypothetical situations....which had real answers...and the students would have to choose which was correct and explain why.

The theme was Survival....so you can obviously edit this you way, maybe with powerpoint etc

Set up the questions, put them in teams. Give them 3 possible answers, and they have to choose the correct one...and explain why.
Also give points per answer if needed and see which team wins..

Example :  What would you do if a bear was running toward you ?
a: If.........................I would climb a tree
b. If.........................I would pretend to be dead
c . If ........................I would run away

In this case the correct answer is B, you can research this and explain why after they have chose and tried to explain their answers.

Other survival questions should be easy to find,  I know that the TV reality show 'Survivor' used to have quizzes with such questions all the time, and Bear Grylls probably has some ridiculous knowledge out there too :P
