Adult student going to America
« on: June 25, 2014, 04:40:51 PM »
Hello, I have an andult student taking my classes to learn how to speak English when he travels to America this August. Any tips or ideas on what lesson plans I should be teaching him? Right now I'm using grammar out of a book, but he's pretty good at reading and understanding english the problem he has is when he tries to speak it.

i would focus on practical stuff he'll need when traveling. how to ask for directions, how to order at a restaurant, how to introduce himself, how to book a train ticket, etc.

make sure to practice lots of dialogs with him. you may want to look at using Andrew Finch's book "Tell Me More". it's heavily focused on speaking, and has some good activities in it. it's available for free too, you can just download it. some of the chapters you may want to skip but some are relevant to traveling abroad, e.g., 'What would you like to eat?' focuses on food, there's a chapter on shopping, and another on asking directions.

here's the link to the book, you just need to save and download the individual pages for each chapter: http://iteslj.org/t/tmm/
