Speaking Contest Help!
« on: July 14, 2014, 01:43:13 PM »
Hey all,

I've been asked to create a rubric for the high school's speaking contest and I am not really sure where to start.

Does anyone have any experience or a sample rubric that has been used in the past? (I've searched the site and I've only found people asking for what kinds of speeches the students ought to prepare).

I was thinking fluency, pronunciation, content, and poise.  Any suggestions?

Questions are for middle school level, but you can adapt.

Students choose 2.
write an answer.
Speak out 1 answer.

My co-teachers had our fifth and sixth graders memorize their speeches so they were judged on accuracy, enthusiasm, and pronunciation.

I taught a speaking class for Nambu district for three years.  I'll attach the rubric we used.

Thanks for all the quick replies!
It's high school and they are memorizing page long manuscripts that they have written themselves.

I think Mr.C's score sheets with some modifications to fit some of the specifics of our situation are going to work well!

A fun speaking test idea: I gave the students an everyday item, and they had to create a sales pitch for the item. They also had to demonstrate how to use it. (For example, a board eraser.) It's fun, and the other students will pay attention.
