Future Tense With Pixar
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:04:33 AM »
First post here guys....sorry for the long lesson explanation, but I think a slight lack of luster in the power point is made up for if the lesson is run as I've just finished conducting it.  Student's really responded to it.

-Lesson Attempts to get high school students to practice using the future tense.  They may already know the technical elements, but practice was very useful for my guys.

1. I begin with a slide of instruction. Emphasize that when the question "What is going to happen?" is asked, the sentences "He/She/They will_____" and "He/She is going to______" are the basic response formulas.

2.Picture slides follow, where I challenge students to answer the question (using full sentences) "what will happen next in this picture?"

3. The highlight of the lesson is a series of Pixar videos.  These videos require the teacher to pause them at a climactic point. After pausing the video, ask students "What will happen next?" This easily turns into a natural competition if you write the answers on the board--they all want to see who will be right. (IMPORTANT: make sure to plan when you'll pause the videos.  I personally can find two places in each to stop and ask.")

4. The final video is a sort film from the Movie Despicable Me.  I just let students watch this one, and have them do the drawing and writing activity at the end.  A second class could be used to have student's finish and present their projects.

*Enjoy.  Let me know how you might improve the lesson.

Hey this sounds like a great idea, but is it possible for you to upload this again in .doc form? My computer can't read .docx files, thanks!!

I would change the middle one to something less gory.  As an example:

I'm Jason and I approve this message!

Thanks for the lesson. I hope to give this one a shot next week.

It says the .odp file is corrupted. Is anyone else unable to download this?

Yeah, that's actually a very wise consideration for others using this lesson.  My school being an all-boys high school, I didn't mind using it.  They responded pretty well, and I didn't think it was heinously offensive for older kids.

Hey guys, I've just uploaded the handout as a .doc file, but have kept the .docx just in case older versions don't maintain my formating very well.

As to someone seeing the message that the .odp file is corrupt, I'm not sure about that. I'm currently able to open my project on a number of computers.

I can't open the ODP file either.  What is ODP anyway??  This sounds like an awesome lesson so if anyone can post it as PPT or something reconizable, that would be great!

ODP is the OpenOffice.org version of Power-Point.  I began using Open Office as my personal computer didn't have Microsoft Office Suit and Open Office is free (and pretty much as useful as Microsoft Office.)  If you're really keen on checking my lesson out and don't know how to convert the file (I sure don't know how to convert), you could go to openoffice.org and download the program.

Thankfully my school computer now has Microsoft Office, so I'll be able to post future lessons in a more user-friendly manner.

Thanks for putting it in Powerpoint form!  Great job making this, I don't think the second one is too violent at all, just a chance to talk about what emotions the penguin is feeling.

HEY GUYS, important heads up!

Youtube has removed my final video due to copyright reasons, so I've re-uploaded my presentation with a new link to the same vid.  What's more, it's now in .ppt format, not .odp.  ;D
