Fun High school activities or games
« on: January 25, 2015, 11:42:41 PM »
Hi All!

I teach at two High schools, one is all girls and the other all boys and I feel like I have ran out of my creative ideas in terms of games or fun activities.

I have made fun quizzes, played Hot seat which has also been a success, but I am wondering if anyone has any other games that they have played with their students that have proven to be a success every time.

It's that awkward time of the year when you go back to normal school for a week and it would be cool to surprise them with a new game.

Any ideas will be welcomed.

Thank you  :azn:

I have a Jeopardy game that I've done with my high schoolers and also a Memory Game where they can earn points.  Both have been successful. The students love having to wager for the final Jeopardy question because it puts their score on the line.   I'll attach the files.

Thank you

I have done Jeopardy with them before and they really enjoyed it, but I am quite excited to try the memory game.

Thanks for the suggestion Mr C

What level are your students, because some of those examples seem quite difficult?
Did you pre teach the vocab before using it in the game?

I'm also struggling to do something fun and new with them these last couple weeks.

Scattegories is my go to game, they love it, and there is basically no prep. I just pass out paper to each team, write the categories on the board, and use a timer and a random letter generator on my phone. I've played this with my classes 4 or 5 times and they get into it every time.

I also recently used a PPT game from here called "Real or Fake" which they LOVED. You can find it if you search the site. Price is Right is usually a winner, too.

Academic boys high school.

The long-form questions, like the lighthouse or the blind man, are designed to prompt yes/no questions that will lead the students to the answer.

Thank you lashutz
Real or Fake looks fun, is the purpose of the game to have them explain why it is real or fake?

Thanks for all your help everyone.

I sometimes have my students race to solve riddles in teams of 4. I printed out and laminated 8 sets. Once a team solves the first riddle, they can collect the second one and so on. As you can imagine, they get very competitive about this. Some of the riddles are tough, so you'll need to give some hints along the way.

I collected these riddles from lovely people on waygook (thank you) and from various websites.

I took Mr. C's puzzlers and made a PDF worksheet from some of the questions he used.

I had to take the easier ones because I actually teach middle school, but I'm planning on trying these out with my A level grade 3's.

There are 4 pages

Thanks Mr C for the inspiration.

With my students, they're more motivated if the reward is good. They value break times between classes, so I have teams complete to collect points and not be the team to stay behind and straighten up the classroom. I'm doing lots of dialogue relays lately. They pass information orally down a line and the last person runs to pass the info to me near the start of the lines. Perhaps the integration of physical activity is also good for waking them up...?
