2015 Grade 5 YBM 1 - 2. Whose Ball is This?
« on: March 17, 2015, 12:50:55 PM »
Here are some materials for Lesson 2.

The chants are supremely awkward in this book so I've attached a couple songs I found before from youtube.

Also included a mystery box game I found from another text that needed minimal changes.

I'm not going to be teaching this chapter until next week, but I already prepped the materials for the intro PPT, and for the PPT's for some of the chapters in the book.

My PPTs include the vocabulary in both English & Korean, as well as the key expressions with both languages.

I'll edit this post if I make/come up with more materials as I teach. I didn't include PPTs for the 4th and 5th chapters.

  • 2-1,2 (Speaking. I combined both chapters 1 &2)
  • 2-3 (Reading)
  • 2-6 (Story Pot)
  • 2-7 (Wrap Up, I mixed up all of the vocabulary in the PPT so the students have to remember which each vocab word is)

I found some videos that may be ok for some classes.

Song: "Whose is it?" (this one is a bit more "cool" and modern)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8n9GC97hh8

Song: "Whose puppy is it?" (this one is kind of funny!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWxrJI_Tna8

Song: "Whose is it?" (this may be a bit immature for them...and it is Busy Beaver, I like their stuff but they always have a lot of ads)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_l8mUJIlyo

Finally, can we report this link to moderator so we can live link to the book?

I just realized the Puppy song was already here!

Also, I reported to the moderator, so hopefully a live link will appear soon!  ;D

2 speaking activities using the simple dialogue "Is this your ___? No, it's not mine/Yes, it's mine."

"Pass the Mystery Bag".  PPT explains it but it's pretty much a 'pass the ball' game.  Each team puts something into the bag (or box or whatever you have), pass the bag until the music stops. Pull out the item, choose another student :"Jinsu, is this your pen?" etc. If they pick the owner the first time they get 3 teams points, 2nd try 2 points, 3rd try they ask "Whose pen is this?" and the owner claims it "It's mine." and the owner gets a point too. Well, that's how I played it.  If I had more class time I would get them to draw a picture of themselves and put that in the bag. "Jooyeon, is this your picture?".  Would be fun trying to match the self portraits - but I know my class would take forever drawing a picture of themselves, and I didn't want it to drag out.

"Heads down, thumbs up".  I had forgotten about this game. It's kind of a 'whodunnit' game.  We used to play it in primary school and always enjoyed it.  The ppt explains it, simple and fun.  However this is adapted to use the dialogue.  The game, once taught, is an easy 5 minute time filler even without using a key expression, or just "I think is was..... Sunhee". We loved it as kids, brings back fond memories.  The thing not in the ppt is explaining how the kids need to sneak around quietly, and if they see anyone sneaking a peek they should just not choose that student, or point out the cheater to the teacher.  Also, trying to act not guilty when they are lined up at the front, because they don't want to be accused.

(The mystery bag was adapted from two different users contributions to different threads using a similar dialogue, but I can't remember who so thanks to those people and feel free to claim the work was yours)

took me ages making this instructional ppt for the mystery bag activity:

roughly 30 students - 10 in each team - five put an object in the bag - the other five do the asking to other groups.

hope it's useful.

Quick intro ppt with the main expressions from periods 1 & 2. Period 3 introduces the expression "Do you like/love -ing?” and "Yes, I like/love -ing.” but I haven't included them in this ppt. If / when I make any more ppt's for this lesson I'll edit this post & include them. As always thanks to the original makers! ;D *EDIT* Forgot to change the title of the lesson on the PPT, be sure to do that before you use it in class.

Pass the Ball game: Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the first or second period)

Heads Up 7 Up game: Instructions included in the PPT. Also included is a PDF to print out the picture cards if needed. (Ideal for the second period)

Sleeping Elephants game: I know that there's already one posted here but this one is different in that it focuses solely on the key sentences and not individual words. I always play sleeping elephants as a reading game but it can easily be used as a writing game too. (Ideal for the fourth or fifth period)

Period 3 Intro: I ganked someone else's intro PPT & added a few slides to introduce the expressions "Do you like/love -ing?” and "Yes, I like/love -ing.”  (Ideal for the third period)

Telepathy game: Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the fifth period)

I also made an uno game for this lesson. I'll also include a ppt I made to explain the rules for regular uno (the only difference is that the kids need to say the expression on the card they put down).

Matching reading game tweaked for this lesson

You should only use the second page- i.e the alphabet matching page. Students need to choose 2 alphabet letters and then you click on them and they read the words. If it is a match, they get one point. If there is no match, click on the orange symbol. It will close the alphabet block again.

I made this handout for my 5th grade classes.  It includes vocabulary, key expressions, unscrambling sentences, textbook dialogues (slightly modified to fit on the page), and some grammar notes with Korean explanations.

Eish! Did you open that PPT? Only one of the page work, and even that is, how shall I put it, messy.

Hi Otto! I have opened it and double-checked it before uploading and mine works fine. Please elaborate on messy?

Just a writing worksheet with lesson 2 key words and sentences.

before the worksheet activity, I will review the keywords and sentence with them via listen and repeat for speaking practice. Then more speaking practice in the bingo section.

Along with a bingo for kids to fill in with key words. Then have the students say a word and all students that wrote that word in their bingo can cross off. The first student to cross off all words in their bingo wins.

***got the template from some other post, thank you!

THNK U to all for the resources posted here.
THNK U RufusW for the PPT games mega pack.

I have to follow the Teacher's Guide, so for the motivation section for Part 2 of this lesson, & to introduce the vocabulary, here is a Guess-the-hidden-picture PPT Game.

*The first slide is missing the word "what" . Guess what the hidden picture is.

Connect 4 and a PPT to show your students how to play.

One small note here: when the students get to "I like ____" and "I love _____" they're supposed to say the verb associated with the object, e.g., "I like playing soccer", "I like taking pictures", etc.
