2015 Grade 5 Daekyo 1 - 3. Do You Want Some More?
« on: March 30, 2015, 03:07:44 PM »
Here are my materials for the lesson.  Period 1 is some riddles about food as a motivation, then a review of the vocabulary.  For per. 2, your students may be interested to see what families around the owrld eat in a week.  It also has a game involving the taste profiles--some prep is needed (or you can use the cards from the book, though sadly this means you will teach them bad information). I also have a fill-in of the Look and Say conversation.  REMOVED

The game is particularly good (Thanks to Adam V.!).  REMOVED

The Ingerdients PPT is also quite interesting--they see pictures of the ingredients and have to guess what the finished food is.  To go with the "project" I have a "make your own western meal" activity. REMOVED

A copy of the Oliver song "Food, Glorious Food" with big easy-to-read lyrics is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9ZoZhfdo0A

Also a worksheet with a word search and a crossword for early finishers. REMOVED

Bon appetit!

I made this for the Hello, Words! part.
Can be done as a pair activity.
Display the PPT and have students complete the chart.

Here are a few reading games I made.  The templates aren't mine so thanks to whoever made them.  The Baskin Robbins game is good as a warm up.

Here are some PPTs that I used for period 2, period 3, and period 4 of this lesson.

I modified some PPTs that others had already posted on here, so Thank you OPs! ;D

The 3.2 PPT was used as a review at the beginning, and then I usually add slides for the Talk Talk and game dialogues, because the book doesn't have it.

For 3.3, I used the beginning as a review, then did the Time Food around the world slides, and my students thought it was interesting. It got a little old explaining each slide after the third and fourth times, but I guess every lesson gets old after having to do them 4 times;P

Running dictation worksheets.

I find that hiding the sentences around the classroom makes it more fun.

Here is a Pinky and the Brain story ppt that I made using mostly key phrases from the past 3 chapters. I used it in period 4.  My ppt editing is amateurish but it gets the story across and my students enjoyed it and got the joke. The story is that Brain fails multiple times to make pancakes including a mind altering poison (they are too salty, sour, etc). Then Pinky makes delicious pancakes to help Brain but threw out the poison because it tastes horrible. It's loosely inspired by an actual episode.

Here is a PPT I made for a review skit using language from chapters 1-3. Super basic, but I didn't see much other review stuff so I thought I'd contribute.

My co-worker shared this ppt with me to introduce students to the new words and expressions I changed a few things and added some new 'taste' vocab.

My students love this lesson so much (they're obsessed with food)...so I suggested an idea for the Project section to my co teacher and we're going to give it a shot next week.

The idea is to make it more fun and give the students a real situation where they can use their speaking skills.

We're going to assign each student a taste that they've been learning from the book (sweet, salty, spicy, sour) and each student will bring something that tastes like that to school for the "project food party" - it can be anything (just a small amount).

We're going to do Part A of the Project and instead of Part B, we'll make a brain storm of all the students' food on the board and practice the food names and the dialogue from Part C.

We're then going to make a long dining table from the tables and have a food party, The students will complete Part C, but with real food! They'll offer their friends some food and use the dialogue. Then they'll complete the chart in their books and we'll find out everyone's favourite food :-)

I feel the project section gives us room to be more creative with the students so my goal this year is to bring the topics to life! I'm hoping this goes down well next week!

Here's a PPT comic to go with the reading section in the book. I used the same picture from the book and blanked the food and some of the words.

I thought it might be fun to have students change the food and taste then practice reading and speaking in pairs and show it to the class.

I always use this durian game for food topics. It has never failed me. I lifted it from somewhere else on the site but edited the foods and dialogue a little.

This game is played like a betting game. If they say "Yes, please", they can choose another food. But if they get a durian they lose their points---- but only for that round--- and it is the next team's turn. It was a little confusing to figure out the best way to score this. I have the most success when I score it like this:
                                                TOTAL
           Round: 1    2    3    4

Team:      1      -    -    -     -
               2      -    -    -     -
               3      -    -    -     -

Usually kids are chanting "durian" by the end of it. haha
Good for 15 mins or so.

Here is a word lotto game for the writing portion of the book. 9 words and students must pick and write the 3 words they think will remain.
