Free talking lesson
« on: June 16, 2015, 10:43:46 AM »

Simple lesson but it went down REALLY well. It was a "free talking" lesson with middle / high level students (2nd grade).

I told them to write the three topics down.
1. Dream vacation
2. Goals after school
3. Perfect girlfriend

Then for each slide I gave them 5 minutes "prep" time - essentially to think about what they would like to say about the topic and then we spoke about the topic for 10 minutes, and then I moved onto the next topic.

I told them they don't HAVE to write anything down, unless they want to. Mostly they just wrote down key ideas that helped them to speak freely during the topic discussions.

By the end of the lesson each person had contributed their answers at least once. They were pretty engaged to.

(I have 20 kids in the class, and all the students participated & listened actively when their friends were talking)

This lesson looks great but I really want to try and get them talking in groups.  Would you have one person talk and another share their opinion one by one or did you have talk in groups and then discuss their opions with the whole class?

They would stand up individually and offer their opinion, but my students are very chatty and would comment on what that person had to say.

In groups would work well too.
