OH NO! WE HAVE TO ARRANGE THE GUESTS!!
« on: August 21, 2015, 11:31:34 AM »
In this game, students are given a scenario where they are part of a company that is responsible for arranging guests at a dinner party to prevent any discomfort. Review the characters with the students and the rules by which the guests may be arranged.

Then, have the students talk about it and discuss afterwards their reasoning.

This activity was inspired by the book, Discussions that Work. It is recommended for advanced-level Korean high school students.

I tried this today. A couple of thoughts I have about it...

(1) It's easy to make this a stand-and-lecture PPT. For the next time, I would try to reduce the Teacher talk time...

(2) Some of the words were very difficult for the students, such as "tactful," and "conservative," words which have some underlying themes relating to them that would not be immediately apparent even to the most proficient of high school students here in Korea.

(3) I spelled "Professor" incorrectly in one of the slides.

(4) The students were engaged with the material, but they couldn't come up with a solution within the allotted 15 minutes. They needed more time and since this activity was the last activity that we did for the class, I told the students that we would continue next time.

All in all, the lesson went blah... perhaps due to my execution of it or maybe because the slides used too many daunting words.

Future Waygookians should consider these thoughts before they decide to use this PPT.

I just consulted with my Korean colleague and we changed some of the wording in the original PowerPoint to make it easier for the students to understand.

Words such as "conservative," and "tactful," are removed and replaced with easier words and concepts to understand. It stands to reason that this more recent version of the PPT will be more successful. I will be curious to know if anyone tries both versions, and which of the two is more successful.

I didn't have the interest to count how many guests were male or female but what is making it confusing is the last 2 stipulations/rules that they must be situated alternately - male and femaie and family members shouldn't sit next to each other.

What dinner party would do these?  A dinner party held by Kim Jung Eun?

This is confusing the students! ;D

I just kept the first rule and mentioned that family members should spread out so that they could facilitate interaction with the other guests.

You might explain "jung" in Korea where Korean guests would be accepting of each other and introduce the fact that some westerners envy or even despise one another - she's too beautiful, etc., keep up with the Jones', etc.

Excellent, I'm so glad you're struggling with this too.

Keep up the great work, chap. I expect you to fully refine this process and report back to me.

Extra pats on the head.

Cheerio.

This sounds interesting, and I love your PPT skills

I think this could be great for my students, but as you mentioned, I would give them a longer time to plan setting up the table

I also will remove the rules, which I think complicate the  lesson. I think them dealing with matching good and bad personalities together is challenging enough.

I will try this next week and see how it goes

Thanks again :)

I edited this a bit to make it easier for my students to understand (and me   )

I also grouped them a bit more. I was confused who was family with who etc. I also changed a few names.

Took out all the rules.

Added two worksheets- one explaining their connections and preferences as well as a place to write their seating reasons. Another to visually work on the seating charts.

I printed out a few of the slides and used it as a discussion tool for an adult learner. This particular student is pretty shy so it worked really well at getting him talking. Thank you so much! I love this concept.

You're very welcome!

I just did this today with two other classes (first and second grade male high school students) and they were REALLY into it. It was almost as if the lesson took care of itself! I also provided the students with an example of how I arrange my middle schoolers in real life (e.g. "Dong Min will sit next to Seung Min because one is talkative and the other is always sleepy") and the students really enjoyed listening to me talk about this, discovering the subtle-yet-deviously-fun ways that teachers can manipulate students.

I'm gonna go ahead and highly recommend this PPT for people, and the awesome worksheets that Rafiqua made for us.

Much love to you, Rafiqua! <B

I had a typo on the worksheet, so re-uploaded

Also this lesson is taking me two periods? Or my students are being REALLY lazy :P

Um Rafiqua, hardly anyone ever responds to my messages on Waygook, so the fact that you're actually contributing to one of my projects here goes way above and beyond the call of duty, by definition.

Let's be friends forever!  ;D

Hey, this lesson looks really, really interesting.  But do you mind to list an example of a "good" seating arrangement.  I'm doing the activity myself and I'm not sure what's ideal.  I'm putting the child, Mary Smith, in the middle of the table next to Amy Elliot, who is next to Colin Smith, etc.  I'm not sure what's idea for the Apple couple, put them next to the Rabbi as he likes to argue?
I just don't want to present this if I can't justify the final result.

Is this really meant for upper-level high school students.

The one I downloaded seemed to fit Korean 5th graders.  Very generic language throughout.  Give your students some credit.

Just some pointers for newbies - older students might be reluctant to speak, trying to save face, but they do know some higher-level English.  Big pitfall for teachers here - dumbing-down lessons.

I'd give more of the characters a broadened synopsis.  Go into more detail on what is a rabbi (Jewish, eats kosher food, etc.), a priest, a mayor, blah blah blah.  One of them is a metrosexual, one is gay, etc.  The girl/daughter is an heiress.

Perhaps they are assembled for some fund raiser going on.  Talk about helping the less-fortunate and donating time, money and resources.

Might be cool to attach some Cluedo activity as a Stage 2.  One of the guests doesn't return from the toilet, etc.

Sure thing, oh Guru of English. Make sure to do your dissertation on that.

Michael - PM me and I'll send you the original docs for this activity.

Thanks,

A lot of HS students can understand high-level English while reading. But if they're listening/speaking/writing, it's different. I like this activity, but I think the only way it'd work for me is if I explained in English, then let them discuss in Korean, and I don't want to do that.

Thanks, toddsqui, for posting ideas and lessons all the time.

I am attaching a sample of work that one of my 1st grade students proposed. Although there are no definite answers, I did like this solution a lot. Perhaps this will give some of you teachers some clarity over the assignment.

Enjoy!
