Hunting in Missouri
« on: April 22, 2011, 05:12:00 PM »
My high school boys enjoyed the topic of hunting.  They were very interested in it, but most of them knew little or nothing about it.  I used this as a lecture/discussion class.  We discussed students' perceptions of hunting at the beginning and then again at the end to see if they had changed.  We also discussed hunting in Korea, the laws and perceptions of hunting in general and the reasons for these, and how these laws and perceptions are different where I am from.  Hunting could also be a good topic for a debate class.  Most of the pictures in the powerpoint are my family members, and my discussion was mostly related to hunting in Missouri specifically, but I wanted to share my ideas with the intention that the powerpoint/discussion would be adapted accordingly.

Just to add - if you ask your students 'Do you like hunting?' they might translate it as 'Do you like scouting for girls?'.

Korean teenagers use '헌팅'(hunting) as slang for trying to chat up girls, just like they use '빵'(bread) as slang for cigarettes.

I'm a hunter myself, from Arkansas, and while I don't find the skinning and cleaning of a deer disturbing, I think that the students here would.  The ppt is awesome, but I would leave out the graphic videos or you might get some parents calling your principal.  Once again though, great powerpoint.

I'm from Hannibal, MO.  Obviously it's your choice whether or not to include the videos.  Most of my high school boys were very interested in watching them, and it helped them understand the process of what happens between killing an animal and eating it, which includes learning about skills and responsibilities that hunters have.  They realized there's more to it than just shooting something.  It was an opportunity to teach about culture and custom where I'm from.  If I taught girls, I probably wouldn't show some of the video clips, or necessarily teach about the topic at all, but there were no issues at my school with them.
