AMERICAN CULTURE (w/ American HS exchange)
« on: January 05, 2016, 02:27:29 PM »
The following 10 lessons are designed to be used in pairs, each lesson spanning a 2 hour period.  However, due to additional hyperlinks to videos and the open-discussion format of these lessons, they can easily be extended into 3 hours each.

Objectives
  • Learn about American culture through the categories of family and tradition; school life; hobbies and activities; food; and a combined category of fashion, music, and dating
  • Discuss how American culture differs from Korean culture, and write questions to ask American students.
  • Receive questions about Korean culture from real American students and discuss with a partner how to best answer them.
  • Record video responses to questions about Korean culture in a cultural exchange.

NOTE: Partnership/connection with real American high schools is not included. I personally contacted my old high school to get questions for my camp, and I will not be providing these with the lesson plans.  However, any high school you survey should be able to provide you with plenty of questions to fill these categories.  I received about 150 responses from my old high school, which I easily organized into the 5 categories and cut down to 20 questions each (one for each student enrolled in my winter camp).

Lesson Plans
There are five categories in this course, and each category is broken down into two lessons: an introduction American culture, and an open discussion where Korean students ask/answer questions.  Each lesson is 2 hours, meaning each category will have 4 hours of class time dedicated to it.  However, due to the nature of this lesson and the amount of content in the PowerPoints, it could easily be doubled if necessary.

NOTE: I prefer my PowerPoints to be fairly self-operating, meaning they often involve several animations per slide, many of which will play automatically.
PLEASE READ THE NOTES ON EACH SLIDE, as they will detail how and where the clicks are, and where there are HIDDEN HYPERLINKS to YouTube videos (for optional expansion).  There are also some personal photos and information in some of the slides that teachers must edit and replace with their own.  All possible changes and hyperlinks are written in the "Notes" section of each slide.  If you have any questions or issues with these lessons, please don't hesitate to comment below or message me.

Lesson 1: American Families and Traditions
This lesson covers general facts about America and its different cultural regions, American history (including issues with discrimination), different types of families, different family activities/traditions, and American holidays.
Materials
  • WinterCampTraditions1.ppt (Day 1): An introductory PPT that gives an overview of the USA, American holidays, and discusses different types of families and family activities/traditions.  This PPT has vocabulary words throughout it that are bolded and underlined .  The Korean translations (and in some cases, further explanations) can be found in the TraditionsVocab.doc.
Please note that this PPT touches on America's history of discrimination against immigrant families, African-Americans, and LGBT people. My kids actually found this really intriguing with the increase of foreigners Korea has seen in recent years (and how they think their country has handled it), but teachers must present with care.  However, I do think this is a massive part of America's history and current culture, and shouldn't be left out.
  • WinterCampTraditions2.ppt (Day 2): A follow up PPT that is to be used as a platform for discussing the previous day's topics.  This PPT contains hyperlinks between slides to help you navigate form category to category according to the students' preferences.
Please note that this PPT also recaps some of the more sensitive issues mentioned in the previous PPT.
  • TraditionsVocab.doc: This is a worksheet with a list of useful vocabulary and a space for students to detail their questions.  If you want, you can distribute just the vocabulary to your students to follow on Day 1, but my students didn't find it absolutely necessary.  This worksheet should be passed out after your general discussion on Day 2.

Lesson 2: American School Life
This lesson covers what life is like for the typical American high school student, including subjects studied; workload and stress; events (such as prom); and post-high school graduation.

Lesson 4: American Food
This lesson covers "classic American" foods, as well as how American has become a melting pot due to emigration and cultural appropriation.  It also discusses how American foods that have become popular in Korea differ from their original source, as well as regional differences in food and diet through the USA.

Lesson 5: American Fashion, Music, and Relationships
This lesson covers American thinking behind fashion and beauty trends, American music (and its history) and American relationships.
Please note that there is some mention of sex and its impact on American teenage culture, but this will be presented in non-graphic and factual way.  This lesson gives teachers the opportunity to dispel stereotypes about Americans and sex that often misrepresent it in Hollywood films.

LESSON 1 FILES
The first PPT for this lesson is a pretty large file, and cannot be uploaded all in one.  Please combine "WinterCampTraditions1..." files A, B, C, and D for the full PPT.
