teacher lead_no learning curve game
« on: October 12, 2016, 02:57:55 pm »
Basically I have very low level High school students who will not play most games if I leave them to themselves. So I need to interact with them directly to make sure they're doing something!

I have also just about given up on teaching them much, and would prefer games that I can explain how to play and then play. No new language needed, just get them talking in English.

Games that have worked alright were things like modified scattergories (I give them a topic and they write as many words as they can...although usually they don't like to write much of anything). PPT memory game (show them a picture for 20 seconds, then hide it and ask them a question about it).

If you have any other such games, I would love to hear about it!

Check out my games on www.notboringenglis h.com

The best game I have used is the What Is It format game. A player draws a card and reads the clues aloud to the other players. The other players need to guess the object/animal from the clues.

All the games I make are student centered so I usually demonstrate a few rounds before letting them take over.

Hope that helps.

Are there games? I could only find the "story"s and the "quiz"es

Thanks for the suggested game. When I used student-centered games they do not play, they only do their make up or talk to each other... If I do not talk to them there is no English used for the whole class. but maybe I can still make it work :)

There's a sidebar: go to resources and then click download, you need a google account to request access.

Personally I haven't worked with high school students but I have a lot of confidence in that format of game. I'd advise with any game that you always demonstrate it and bring all the students in close. If the game is interesting enough then the students will usually be motivated to play it.

Anything on a card or something with a hidden piece of information always works well. I'd love to find out how high school students respond to the game though so if you get a chance to play it then give me an update.
