Best classroom management tool for teachers!
« on: January 20, 2017, 05:37:57 am »
If you haven't checked out ClassDojo, you're missing out. It's an app (and website) that I use to give feedback, or Dojo points, to students for skills they are displaying in class. I give points for everything from participation to focus to teamwork. Students get their very own monster that represents them in class -- they absolutely love it and are SO motivated by it. What's even more amazing is you can take photos from class and post them to your 'Class Story'. Parents are able to sign up, and parent invitations can be printed in Korean! Also, captions on your Class Story photos can be translated by parents, too -- which is amazing for English Language Teachers who struggle with the language barrier. You can also privately message parents in the app, too, and set quiet hours so that you aren't messaged at all hours. Keeps a nice separation between professional and personal communication. Hope you check it out! ;D classdojo.com or search the android or ios app store

Hey

I am trying to set this up as it is such an awesome concept but it is all in Korean and doesn't seem to let me access the English account.
What did you do?

there should be a drop-down box to change the language. log out if you are logged in, go back to the homepage, scroll all the way down to the bottom, and look in the bottom right.

anyway love this tool, been using it for a while and my kids respond really positively to it. i have each class listed as a 'student' and the classes compete against each other in each grade.

Hello,

Do you also have 22 classes with 30 students in each? I wanted to use this last year but I found it difficult to do so with that amount of kids.

I have 20 kids in each class and I think it'll even be too much: I use a lot of powerpoint as well so it'll be really annoying switching back and forth.

I will try it out on my smaller classes (10 kids) this term and see how it goes.

It's a shame there doesn't seem to be a page where I can log test scores and notes on each student.

I used to use it with my extra curricular classes, as the no. of students was more manageable. But even then, I found I was spending too much time trying to find students on the app to give them points. So I used fake laminated dollar bills and handed those out to students who did well and then converted the dollar bills into Class Dojo points at the end of the lesson.

I think Koayashi's idea of using it for different classes to compete with each other is great :D Just wondering how you reward the top classes?
I never finish anyth

Hey everyone -- I suggest downloading the mobile app and giving points from your phone instead of from the desktop. It's a lot faster and will take less time away from class. Also, if your students enjoy the sounds of the points, you can use your phone as a "remote" -- once you give a point from your phone it will appear on the computer. Although it might seem like using ClassDojo with so many students in so many classes is a lot, it actually ends up saving me so much time -- really helpful to cut down on transition time and keeping kids focused and engaged. I also find the timer and the random feature to be super helpful!

Using Class Story to share VIPs (Visual Instruction Plans) VIPs are lesson plans in visual form. They are made up of a string of visual prompts that provide a clear set of plans for correct performance. I teach EFL in South Korea, and one of the best uses I have found for the

ClassDojo Story feature is to send home VIPs the day before I use them in class.
Sending VIPs home the day before they are used in class gives students an idea of what we will be doing in class and lets them break down the instructional language by previewing it in the comfort of their home (giving them the opportunity to translate anything they don't understand).

Does anyone else use Class Story like this? Any advice on how I could use it more effectively?

it's entirely up to you. i order a giant bag of those chocolate coins. and the top 3 classes in each grade get prizes. in the top class each student gets 3 coins. in the class that placed 2nd each student gets 2 coins, and in the 3rd placed class the students get 1 coin each.

this gets done twice per semester. once half-way through, and again at the end. after they get the reward half way through the semester, the points reset to zero and start all over again. that's really important to keep the motivation up. because even if a class didn't win first time around they can still try and improve for the 2nd half of the semester.

you could make the rewards smaller and give them monthly if you wanted. or every 2 months.

Other ideas for rewards that won't cost you any money

For individuals:
- Sit with a friend
- Sit in the teacher's chair
- "Dojo Master" (give points on the iPad, with teacher instruction)
- Teach a lesson
- Shoes off

For the entire class:
- Brain break (check out GoNoodle)
- Movie time
- Choose your seat for the day
- Student's choice lesson

:-* I have already used this app since 2013
That is amazing app to control students and help to participate.
And also we can put images what we want. we can upload gif, png and  jpeg piles.
Furthermore, we can add the kind of points and recreate the name of points and change the score of points.
Now, Teacher can make a group, so use it when we play game.
There is a stopwatch too.

Class Dojo is an awesome tool to have when you are teaching a small class, an afterschool class, or even just a few classes in one grade.

If you're teaching 22+ classes and grades 3-6, it gets very messy and difficult to manage along with teaching your classes.

I would suggest trying something else easier to do like stickers or a points chart in the class for individuals or for the whole class (class vs class points). Personally, I go with the individual sticker charts they keep in their books and I give out stickers to groups who did their best during the class.

I don't have computers in my classroom, do you think its useful if I just use it on my phone? or my laptop? Do the kids need to be able to see it on the screen? Thanks!

I tried the 'choose your seat' reward and it was a nightmare lol. The displaced kid was always upset.

If we are talking about Class Dojo, I wouldn't bother on a phone. a big part of the appeal to me is that students can see their points.

A laptop maybe, but only for a small class size.
