Talking(teaching) about Mental Health. Need some ideas.
« on: June 07, 2017, 09:53:07 AM »
Hey guys, so I have been thinking more and more about how much pressure kids and teens are under in this country so I was hoping to do a class or 2 or 3 about mental health but I'm not sure. I know its not talked about a lot in Korea and I also know a lot of their pressure comes from their parents. I thought about first doing a lessons on feelings and stress and how feelings are okay and maybe have them talk about ways to deal with stress. If this is received well, then maybe I would speak to my co-teacher about talking about deeper stuff.  I wondered what you guys thought about this. If you think its not a bad idea, where is a good place to start?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would first explain to them that a healthy mind is like a healthy body: it needs to be looked after, and many countries take mental health seriously, without any stigma attached.

The fact is that most people could benefit from or need counselling or psychiatry of some kind, although relatively few realize its benefits.

Western people have had a cultural history of understanding the mind. Everyone has heard of Jung or Freud; words like ego, complex, paranoid,  etc are everyday phrases. Therapy does not really have the same stigma it used to. Rather its often viewed as a luxury to be indulged by the rich and famous.

Catch my drift?

i didn't realise so many waygook.org users were also qualified to help students with/discuss mental health issues

sounds like a terrible idea, and most likely outside your contracted job description anyway

What grade level are you teaching?

I had a lesson on stress and giving advice for high school students.

It's a conversation class, so I wanted them to practice how to give advice and suggestions...the lesson wasn't focused on dealing with mental health.

However, the lesson went by pretty smoothly and I got some pretty good answers about how to deal with stress.

Message me if you want my materials.
