Paid Subscription for Waygook Lesson Plans
« on: September 11, 2017, 11:00:57 AM »
Firstly, what? you're selling lesson plans that aren't yours?

Secondly, this is not well thought out. I tried to pay for the subscription and the only option is through paypal? FYI not everyone has a paypal account.

Anybody have links to other lesson plan sharing websites?

We're all in Korea, you know what would be super simple? A bank transfer.

A user is in the process of making a new site.

http://korshare.jcink.net/index.php?s=08c7916562f32da3d533248b351dbeb9&act=Reg&CODE=00

I don't understand why they didn't try putting in more ads, making a patreon, or signing up for TAD ads. I'm sure there are plenty of people who'd willing support the site financially but don't like the idea of holding lessons hostage.

Waygook admins, you've made a mistake here.

Zero communication with this change.  Even if you cancel it and rollback, the damage has been done and you are going to lose a lot of uploaders.

What did you guys think was going to happen?

I am unable to use PayPall on Gmarket anymore because they say "You must have a Korea based account."

My address is in Korea. My card is in Korea. My location in the settings is in Korea. How the hell do you make a Korea based account?

And does that affect this here? Just curious.

If you clink the link it does let you pay with a credit or debit card. Still suuuuucks but just letting you know.

The site admin is in Canada. I think the server-thingies are, too.

This definitely was not the way to go...
It's one thing to need money to maintain a website, but it's another to suddenly lock up all of the content shared among the community and ask for money to allow access.

-This was not communicated.
-Teacher's materials are not the property of waygook, and while you may have not claimed ownership of them, you still have effectively taken a huge library of them hostage for ransom. Teachers did not upload their materials to waygook for the owner(s) of the website to monopolize on them.
-Metaphorically speaking, what you've done is effectively take away a toy from a child that isn't spoiled and didn't deserve the toy to be taken away. The teachers created materials, the owner(s) of the site did not create all of them.

Waygook is eventually going to get toppled by another webpage where lessons are freely uploaded.

I suspect a number of teachers are going through their materials at this very moment and removing them. This happens to game modding sites all the damn time, so its such a shame to see waygook destroy itself by taking this well trodden path. For one reason or another, they start monetising the work of their users, who donated freely. Users pull the work and leave a shell behind. The subscription fee is dropped, but by that point its too late as the modders have moved onto another page and the site dies.

well they are also charging 100 for recruiters to post jobs...man sad to see it go this way. I paid the year, but I will most likely download every single file and then re-upload them to a free site. Not right to make money off stuff you didn't create.

So the announcement thread is locked or something like that. Way to stifle discussion. Anywho..

Seems to me that the simple way around all of this was to keep the lesson plan sections free to use and paywall the rest. That way, if you were hellbent on using the site as anything other than P2P, you could do so after paying a "donation" fee to help for the upkeep of servers etc while waygook got o keep their promise (in their own ToS) about keeping lesson plan content free and accessible..

but, then again, what do I know..

If the issue is unplanned usage spikes, why not just cap the amount of bandwidth a user can take up a month?
Set it for something reasonable: 150mb or so (about 10 powerpoints) and then offer unlimited  downloads as part of the premium package?

I'm not really angry about this implementation, but I do think the situation was very poorly handled.
There should have been more communication and notice in advance.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Someone is gonna use the material on here, download it, and then upload it to another site where it can be harnessed TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL! ...or something along those lines.

This is the dumbest Thing. I'm only here for 2 more months, so I would have to pay $10 bucks, which is technically the press for 6 months. So glad I'm leaving soon so I don't have to deal with waygook.org anymore.

I mean...it goes to paypal but you don't need an account. You can use paypal to process the payment via a credit/debit card. I don't have paypal either but I did it. It's like using paypal just to process the payment securely.

The admin's communication approach seems to be locking threads without answering any questions and instead giving some vague waffle.
