Extra Class SOS: Low Prep Ideas Needed
« on: November 17, 2017, 02:32:55 PM »
I'm writing to ask for some advice about a recent development at my hagwon. You see, over January, we will be having an extra class in addition to our normal workload. I will be seeing the same class everyday for a month but luckily they will be at least solid intermediate speakers and higher.

The interesting thing is that I have a lot of freedom over how I conduct the class. My supervisor suggested that if he were to run a course, he would maybe teach economics because that's what his major is in. It sounded like I could pick a theme or subject and make the course about that.

Call me lazy, but I would really like preparation time for this class to take up as little of my time as possible. Given that my supervisor has stated that I could even teach the class without a book if I wanted to source my own materials, I was wondering if you all had any advice on what the easiest (to plan for) and most interesting topic would be for the students.

Maybe a debate class? You could provide a new topic/issue to discuss each week. Or in the first class you can give some examples of topics and then get students to think or their own that they would like to discuss over the upcoming weeks.
You can provide materials/sources like newspapers, educational videos, articles. That's most of the prep you would need to do. Then students do a lot of the work. Brainstorming their ideas, it's good for getting them to think about reasoning (we all know how textbook and memorization focused Korea is lol). They can develop arguments and debate with each other?

Hey, thanks a bunch for your reply!

Based on your advice and the advice of some of my co-workers, I'm leaning towards trying for something like an "Ethics of Science and Technology" class. My boss thinks the course would be more appealing to the students if it is themed, and I think there's a lot of stuff that can be done with the theme that I've chosen.

Do you have any advice for what to do in a debate class when we're not debating? My boss doesn't actually expect me to have a debate every class as he fears the students will get bored. I can think of having a few activities to practice science, technology, and ethics vocabulary and maybe some sort of "Colonize Mars" roleplay / project where the students have to pick from a pool of candidates, but I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with more general purpose activities to fill the void.
