Hi,
Does anyone have any ideas for back to school lessons / activities for middle school students?
I'll have some new students so I will do introductions with these kids, but I'm lacking ideas of what to do with the students I taught last semester.
I plan on doing some kind of 'what did you do on vacation' activity and showing some photos from mine, but I'm struggling to think of an fun way to do this and keep their interest.
Thanks for any ideas!

I plan on doing a Bucket List lesson with my kids to get them thinking about things they want to do this year. I have also done a lesson where they write a letter to their future selves and I give it back to them at the end of the year. There are lessons available for both these topics on this website. :)

This year I'm doing a "What did you do on vacation?", but MASH style, so their result is random and possibly interesting. (Columns: What did you do? Where? With who? How was it?) If you don't know MASH, Google is your friend. I let students fill in the columns with any activities/locations/etc that they want (i.e. flying on the moon is ok), and that way they have fun with it (especially if you let them pick the options for your example).
I've also done a repeat of the "future letter" each year, where I go over useful phrases they learned the previous year, and they have to use those to write a new letter (which I also give them during their last speaking test). That way they're writing different things than last time, and reviewing what they've already learned in the first class.

Thanks for the MASH idea, it's great! Used it for my first lesson back with my old students and it went down really well.
First day PPT and worksheets for anyone who is in need. Includes:
Quick intro for any new / forgetful Ss.
Rule recap
General vacation chit-chat
'Find someone who ...' mingling activity / bingo
shostager's MASH idea with examples
Postcard writing
If there's time at the end, pick some random Ss to read their postcard to the class.
Edit: Typo in the postcard - 'a PC room / the PC room'

Ok, so I'm a total newbie when it comes to MASH and I googled it but it didn't look anything like the one in the PPT and just confused me even more. Can anyone give me a breakdown?
Thanks in advance~!

Originally you play MASH with a 3x3 grid, but with shostager's idea you only have 4 categories. You can apply the concept with any number of categories though.

I didn't bother with the swirly thing at the end though, just used a random number generator. Or just pick a number yourself.

Also, if you use a 4x4 grid like I did, the only deletion numbers (the swirly thing) that would work are: 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. I write them on the board and just have students choose one (but not the one I used to demonstrate!)
